About this file

This document is a technical specification section for the FY22 Site Fire Suppression Improvements project at NSA Mechanicsburg, PA, prepared by Fisher Engineering on 11/14/23. The specification details installation requirements for plumbing systems, focusing on precise technical guidelines for water pipe installation, including critical requirements such as: installing a full port ball valve and drain 6 inches above the floor at the water service line entry, positioning valves with controls at the valve body, and placing a pressure gauge downstream of pressure reducing valves to verify downstream pressure does not exceed 75 PSI during fire pump operations. Additional detailed installation instructions cover pipe cutting, repairing, protection of fixtures, pipe connections, branch configurations, and joint assembly, emphasizing precise placement, avoiding structural damage, maintaining proper distances between services, and using appropriate fittings for changes in pipe direction and size.

FY22 SITE FIRE SUPPRESSION IMPROVEMENTS (FINAL SUBMISSION) 1654727

NSA MECHANICSBURG, PA FISHER ENGINEERING (11/14/23)

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

The plumbing system must be installed complete with necessary fixtures, fittings, traps, valves, and accessories. A full port ball valve and drain must be installed on the water service line inside the building approximately 6 inches above the floor from point of entry. Valves must be installed with control no lower than the valve body. Provide a pressure gauge downstream of pressure reducing valves for testing, to verify downstream pressure is not in excess of 75 PSI when fire pumps are operating.

3.1.1 Water Pipe, Fittings, and Connections

3.1.1.1 Cutting and Repairing

The work must be carefully laid out in advance, and unnecessary cutting of construction must be avoided. Damage to building, piping, wiring, or equipment as a result of cutting must be repaired by mechanics skilled in the trade involved.

3.1.1.2 Protection of Fixtures, Materials, and Equipment

Pipe openings must be closed with caps or plugs during installation. Upon completion of the work, the fixtures, materials, and equipment must be thoroughly cleaned, adjusted, and operated.

3.1.1.3 Mains, Branches, and Runouts

Pipe must be accurately cut and worked into place without springing or forcing. Structural portions of the building must not be weakened.

Branch pipes from service lines may be taken from top, bottom, or side of main, using crossover fittings required by structural or installation conditions. Supply pipes, valves, and fittings must be kept a sufficient distance from other work and other services to permit not less than 1/2 inch between finished covering on the different services. Bare and insulated water lines must not bear directly against building structural elements so as to transmit sound to the structure or to prevent flexible movement of the lines. Changes in pipe sizes must be made with reducing fittings. Use of bushings will not be permitted except for use in situations in which standard factory fabricated components are furnished to accommodate specific accepted installation practice. Change in direction must be made with fittings.

3.1.1.4 Pipe Drains

Pipe drains indicated must consist of 3/4 inch hose bibb with renewable seat and ball valve ahead of hose bibb. At other low points, 3/4 inch brass plugs or caps must be provided.

3.1.2 Joints

Installation of pipe and fittings must be made in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Mitering of joints for elbows and notching of straight runs of pipe for tees will not be permitted. Joints must be made up with fittings of compatible material and made for the specific purpose intended.
