About this file
This document outlines the scope of work for an annual inspection of the port main reduction gear and quill input shaft coupling diaphragm aboard the USNS John Lenthall (TAO 189). The inspection will be conducted in accordance with technical manuals by a manufacturer-authorized representative from Cincinnati Gear and will include a visual inspection of the normally loaded thrust collar and thrust cone contact, Kopflex coupling faces and hardware, gap measurements, and borescope inspection of the diaphragm coupling. The manufacturer's representative will direct a shear-wave NDT inspection of the Kopflex coupling. Records will be kept of mesh conditions, rust, and measurements taken. Regulatory bodies will witness the inspection. Upon completion, the reduction gear covers will be reinstalled with new gaskets and fasteners coated with anti-seize compound.
The related federal contract opportunity is for a Mid-Term Availability in support of the USNS John Lenthall (TAO 189) issued by the Department of the Navy's Military Sealift Command under solicitation number N3220520R4009.

7.0 STATEMENT OF WORK
7.1 All work to be accordance with reference 2.1.1 and inspection to be accomplished under direct supervision of a manufacturer authorized representative see paragraph 7.14 for source.
7.2 Visual inspection of normally loaded, active, thrust collar thrust cone contact. Document “as inspected” contact radial length (2.125 inched theoretical), evidence of heat, and uneven contact or wear condition.
7.3 Preform a visual inspection of the Kopflex coupling faces and hardware. Perform a shear-wave NDT inspection of the Kopflex coupling as directed by the Reduction gear Cincinnati Representative.
7.4 Feeler gage inspect thrust collar to input pinion shoulder gap. (“A” of enclosure 2.2.1.)
7.5 Feeler gage inspect forward side of thrust collar to 2-piece retaining ring clearance. (“B” of enclosure 2.2.1). Has thrust collar displaced metal from 2-piece retaining ring?
7.6 Inspect gap between forward side of thrust collar and one piece-retaining ring from uniform gap. (“C” of enclosure 2.2.1.)
7.7 Record any discoloration or built up of “baked oil” on outside diameter or back face of thrust collar or retaining rings.
7.8 Visually inspect retaining ring “tack” welds if present. Check retainer for evidence of moving forward. Check for retaining screws. Record the length of the shoulder on the input pinion that extends past the back face of the solid retaining rings. (“b” of enclosure 2.2.1.)
7.9 Feeler gage inspect “total” thrust cone axial clearance.
7.10 Inspect diaphragm for quill shaft input coupling. Utilizing a bore scope for the inspection.
7.11 Record general condition of main and PTO gear meshes.
7.12 Record general condition relative to rust.
7.13 Conduct inspection as required by regulatory bodies for both port and starboard reduction gears. MSC Rep., Chief Engineer, and ABS Surveyor to witness inspection.
7.14 Upon completion of inspection, reinstall covers with new gaskets and necessary new fasteners. All bolting to be coated with "Anti-seize" compound prior to reinstallation.
