About this file

The document is a visitor logistics information guide for the Southeast Alaska Acoustic Measurement Facility (SEAFAC), providing detailed instructions for accessing and navigating the location near Ketchikan, Alaska. Key logistical details include transportation information such as ferry schedules for Ketchikan International Airport, rental car options with limited availability from May-October, and taxi services with approximate fares. The guide emphasizes the need for proper identification for site access, recommending either a current CAC/DBIDS card or a completed SECNAV Form 5512 background check.

The document provides specific guidance on traveling to SEAFAC, located on Back Island and accessed via boat from Knudsen Cove Marina, which is approximately 12 miles north of Ketchikan. Visitors are advised about local conditions, including the rainforest environment with over 12 feet of annual rainfall, and are cautioned about a landslide area that may cause 15-20 minute travel delays through Fall 2025. Recommendations include wearing appropriate footwear for marina docks and boats, bringing layers and a lightweight rain jacket, and coordinating transportation and itinerary through the event point of contact.

Clothing:

We are in a rain forest and generally receive over 12 feet of rain per year. Expect rain. It doesn’t rain heavily all the time, but there is often some amount of precipitation expected. Layers are wise, and a lightweight rain jacket is usually sufficient for travel to/from the facility.

Footwear:

Access to the island involves traversing marina docks and boarding boats. Please wear appropriate footwear for docks and boats. Both will move and can be slick when wet. Boots aren’t required as sneakers can work if they keep your feet dry, but no heals, and avoid dress shoes.

Logistics:

SEAFAC is located on Back Island which is accessed by boat from Knudsen Cove Marina.

Knudsen Cove Marina (407 Knudsen Cove Rd) is approximately 12 miles North of The Landing Hotel in Ketchikan.

This is a private Marina with parking to the right at the bottom of the hill. If full, park in the upper or lower lots (state launch lots) to the left of the access road.

Coordinate itinerary through event POC to ensure transportation to/from the site.

Note: Generally, for small groups, you will arrange your own travel between town and the marina, we will arrange boat transportation between the island and the marina.

Travel Delay Warning through Fall 2025: A recent landslide just past the airport parking lot on the way to Knudsen Cove will cause periodic delays north of town until repairs are completed. Delays are typically 15-20 minutes when they occur.
