About this file

This document is an overview briefing on the Artillery Proof Gun Stand (PGS), an interoperability platform developed by the U.S. Government and managed by the Joint Program Executive Office for Armaments & Ammunition. The PGS is a hard-mounted testing platform initially fielded in 2023 with additional fielding planned for 2025. The system eliminates the need to use existing weapon systems for testing purposes, thereby mitigating wear and tear on operational cannons. The platform is designed for ammunition evaluation (including new, foreign, and lot acceptance testing), cannon evaluation (including proofing and interior ballistics assessment), and interoperability testing through standardized methodology that enables shareable data and direct one-to-one comparisons.

The PGS features a hard-mounted platform with elevation operational range from -2.5° to 72° and full 360° traverse, engineered for a 30-year service life in harsh environments. The modular gun mount accepts variable cannon configurations from 105mm to 155mm (23-58 caliber length), utilizing a "Tube Sleeve" interface that accommodates cannons up to 13 inches in diameter. Current configurations support M776 and M199 cannons with others in development. The system separates into three subsystems for transportability, requires approximately four hours for installation, complies with highway standards in the U.S. and Europe, and fits within a standard 40-foot ISO container. The system includes contracts for spare parts and is engineered for ease of maintenance. The U.S. Government is primed to produce and support additional units and intends to standardize the PGS as the common interoperability platform for all ammunition and cannon validation both within the continental United States and overseas.
