About this file
This document is an instructional guidance document on Military Standard 129 (Mil-Std-129R) marking and shipping label requirements for GSA vendor partners.
The guidance provides a brief overview of Mil-Std-129R requirements for marking unit packs, intermediate containers, and exterior containers. Unit and intermediate container marking must include barcoded NSN with or without hyphens, cage code, part number, nomenclature, quantity and unit of issue, contract or purchase order number, batch/lot number, shelf-life marking, TCN number if available, and if both contract and purchase order cannot fit on the label, the purchase order number takes precedence. Exterior container marking uses the same basic format as unit containers but omits item description; additionally, NSN, Purchase Order Number, and CAGE Code must be barcoded. The document specifies that Military Shipping Labels (MSLs) are required for all shipping addresses and must contain 18 specific data elements including Transportation Control Number (TCN), Transportation Account Code/Postage, consignor DODAAC/CAGE and address, type of service, ship-to/POE address, priority, port of debarkation, project code, gross weight, cube, date shipped, FMS case number, piece number, and 2D (PDF417) bar code. Identification text marking on unit packs and intermediate containers must include NSN/NATO stock number, CAGE code, part number, item description, quantity and UI, contract or purchase order number, military preservation method and date, shelf life, and serial number(s). For exterior containers and unpacked items, marking must additionally include gross weight, proper shipping name and HAZMAT identification number, and hazardous materials information. The document includes detailed figures illustrating proper label placement and examples of bar code configurations and is accompanied by a vendor acknowledgment signature block confirming understanding and compliance with Mil-Std-129R requirements.
