About this file

Appendix H of the MassDOT Service Plazas Lease document outlines a comprehensive list of prohibited uses for the service plazas operated under this contract. The document, issued by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), provides an exhaustive 29-point list of activities and businesses that are not permitted at the service plaza locations. These prohibitions include a wide range of uses such as storage facilities, manufacturing operations, second-hand stores, mobile home parks, junkyards, fire sales, laundromats, auto repair shops, veterinary facilities, mortuaries, pornographic establishments, head shops, gambling facilities, car washes, fortune telling businesses, and the sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages.

The prohibitions are designed to maintain the quality, safety, and intended purpose of the service plazas, with some specific exceptions noted for certain activities that may be permitted with MassDOT's approval or as part of the Master Revitalization Plan. The document allows for some flexibility, such as temporary construction trailers, laundry services for commercial truckers, and incidental governmental or charitable gambling activities. The restrictions aim to ensure that the service plazas remain focused on providing essential services to travelers, maintaining a clean, safe, and appropriate environment for users of the highway service areas.
