About this file
This document is an amendment to a solicitation for the acquisition of liquid argon (LAr) circulation and condenser pumps, variable frequency drives (VFDs), overhaul kits, and spare impellers for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF), Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE).
The amendment provides clarification on the pump design requirements, specifically that a combination of an exterior motor and magnetically coupled long shaft pump in the cryogenic fluid is desired. It confirms that the pump bearings can be lubricated by the liquid argon. The amendment also states that canned motor pumps do not meet the design intent. The solicitation has a proposal due date of August 29, 2024 and is issued by the Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

Question and Answer Submitted for RFP 357769-BF LAr Pumps 8/8/2024
Q1. What type of centrifugal pump is desired for these applications? Please clarify. Section 4 states the pumps should be magnetically coupled to the motor, seemingly implying a mag-drive pumps. However; 7.1.7 & 7.2.7 state that the pumps must have self-lubricated bearings when in contact with the liquid argon.
A1: A combination of an exterior motor to the fluid pressure boundary to driving a long shaft pump in the liquid argon through a magnetic coupling. The adjacent pump housing and internal impeller are designed to be in the cryogenic fluid while the motor itself stays at room temperature. The statement in Section 4 is correct in stating that the pumps are magnetically coupled to the motor. The statement in Section 7 is slightly confusing as the self-lubricated bearings are attached to the said shaft that is in the liquid argon.
Q2: Since the Mag-drive pumps use internal sleeve(journal) bearings, should the process fluid be lubricating between the shaft & stationary bearing?
A2: See answer to Q1.
Q3: Are canned motor pumps an acceptable pump design to quote? Should the design meet the intent of the specifications and commonly used cryogenic services?
A3: The canned motor pump option as we understand it would not meet the required design intent.
8/12/2024 Q1. Can you recommend a manufacturer for the pumps?
A1. No, we are unable to recommend a manufacturer for the magnetic coupling to shaft configuration.
Q2. The response does not clarify if a zero-leakage, containment shell, is a mag-drive pump what is desired for this application?
A2 This style of pump has the bearings installed to magnetic coupling / shaft configuration. The shaft is immersed in the liquid argon making the liquid argon the lubricant in this configuration.
Q3. Are the journal bearings lubricated by liquid argon acceptable?
A3. Yes, See answer in A2.
All other terms and conditions remain unchanged.
