About this file
This document is the Functional Requirements for the Liquid Argon Circulation Pump Units for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) project.
The key details are:
- The circulation pump units will be located inside the North/South Detector Cavern envelopes, with 4 pumps divided into 2 groups of 2 pumps each.
- The pumps must be designed to handle liquid argon flows at temperatures ranging from 310K to 87K, with an adiabatic efficiency greater than 0.5.
- The pumps will be used for initial purge and cooldown, normal operations, bearing replacement, maintenance, and purge/standby mode.
- The design parameters include a maximum allowable working pressure of 130.5 psig/9 bar and a maximum pressure drop of 1.1 psi (75.8 mbar) in the upstream piping.
- The document does not contain details on a specific federal contract opportunity, but rather provides functional requirements for the circulation pump units.

1 Scope of Document This document describes the functional requirements for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) main Liquid Argon Circulation Pump Units for Cryostats 1 and 2.
2 Circulation Pump Unit Current Interface Requirements The current Circulation Pump Units to the Cryostats shall be located inside spaces allocated in the North / South Detector Cavern envelopes where four (4) pumps are divided into two (2) groups with two (2) pumps on each, see Figure 2-1 below. This configuration is to be check against the final configuration.
Figure 2-1: Current Circulation Pump Unit Skid to Cryostat Typical Configuration (To be checked)
The current configuration is highlighted in Figure 2-2 below. The red highlighted section is the pumps themselves that show the 4 (four) circulation pumps that come off the cryostat. The yellow highlighted sections are the upstream piping that is made of 4” vacuum jacketed piping. The green highlighted sections are the downstream piping that is made of 4” vacuum jacketed piping. The blue highlighted section is the 6” vacuum jacketed manifold that connects all four of the downstream piping streams. This outlet will also merge with the common outlet coming out of the condenser system. The combined flow goes to the CUC.

3 Circulation Pump Technical Requirements
3.1 The liquid argon pumps shall be designed for internal vacuum and for a pressure of 10 bar and shall be suitable for handling argon flows at any temperature ranging from about 310 K to about 87 K (for the cool-down and warm-up processes).
3.2 The liquid argon pumps shall each have an adiabatic efficiency higher than 0.5.
4 Modes of Operation for Circulation Pumps Units The Circulation Pumps units defined in this Functional Requirements document will be used for the following modes of operation:
1. Initial purge and cooldown.
2. Normal operation.
3. Bearings replacement.
4. Maintenance
5. Purge and standby mode.
Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) / Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) - US Page 4-3
The current configuration uses 4 pumps in modular fashion. The functional parameters should dictate the optimal number of pumps and their characteristics as long as requirements are met. Redundancy shall be considered to ensure uninterrupted operations.
4.1 Supply Initial Purge and Cooldown
The Supply shall be cleaned up from air in the system, using cylinder argon gas for pump and backfilled of process line and pump space. After using pure argon from cryostat, purge the process lines and vent it, slowly cooldown the system.
4.2 Normal Operations
When the system is clean and cold, start the pump stepper based on pump manuals. Increase the pump speed to nominal. During Normal operations for Cryostat shall be sufficient to work with one pump. During the Cryostat Fill process four (4) pumps are running.
4.3 Bearing Replacement
Based on liquid argon pump manuals, each pump needs to replace bearings approximately each 6000 working hours. Supply shell be able to replace bearings on each pump without interruption of circulation process.
4.4 Maintenance
Any of the pump units shall be capable of being taken out of service for maintenance while any combination of the other units remains in operation. The pumps shall be divided into two operational groups (Pump Group 1 and Pump Group 2), representing pump units, and shall work under the same conditions.
4.5 Supply purge and standby mode
After pumps bearing replacement all process lines shall be pulled in vacuum and cleaned with argon gas from cylinder first and backfilled from working pump common manifold. System shall be ready to operate.
