About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) / Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) project. The SOW describes the requirements for the liquid argon (LAr) circulation and condenser pumps for Cryostats 1 and 2.

The scope of work encompasses the engineering, manufacturing, testing, certification, and delivery of the LAr condenser pumps, LAr circulation pumps, variable frequency drives (VFDs), overhaul kits, and spare impellers. For Cryostat 1, there are 3 LAr condenser pumps and 3 LAr circulation pumps, along with 6 VFDs. For Cryostat 2, there are another 3 LAr condenser pumps, 3 LAr circulation pumps, and 6 VFDs. The pumps must meet specific technical, operational, and mechanical requirements, including pressure, temperature, efficiency, and leak rate standards. The document also outlines the required deliverables, quality assurance procedures, project management, and documentation management for the scope of work.

Statement of Work Project Introduction

Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) / Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) - US 3-3

The International Electric Code (IEC) may be used if supporting documentation is provided to prove an equivalent or greater level of safety to that afforded by NFPA 70E NEC. The use of IEC shall be approved by FRA.

3 Project Introduction

LBNF (http://lbnf-dune.fnal.gov/) will provide the infrastructure necessary to support the massive neutrino detectors located deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota (SD). The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will employ four (4) such detectors, housed in cryostats requiring almost 70,000 tons of liquid argon (LAr), about 17,400 tons for each cryostat. DUNE (http://www.dunescience.org/) is expected to achieve transformative discoveries, making definitive determinations of neutrino properties, examining the dynamics of supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and probing the possibility of proton decay. Figure 3-1 shows an overview of LBNF/DUNE.

Figure 3-1: LBNF/DUNE at Fermilab and SURF.

The cryogenics infrastructure for LBNF is split between two locations:

• aboveground at the Receiving Facility

• belowground within the Detector Caverns and the Central Utility Cavern (CUC), shown in Figure

3-2.

The two locations are separated vertically by nearly one mile.

Statement of Work Modes of Operation for Condenser Pumps Units

Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) / Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) - US 8-13

8 Modes of Operation for Condenser Pumps Units The Condenser Pumps units defined in this Functional Requirements document will be used for the following modes of operation:

1. Cryostat Fill

2. Normal Operations

3. Bearing Replacement

4. Maintenance

The proposed configuration uses 2 pumps in modular fashion. Vendor should specify performance of pumps running in parallel. The functional parameters should dictate the optimal number of pumps and their characteristics as long as requirements are met. Full redundancy is not required. One spare condenser pump per cryostat is sufficient.

8.1 Cryostat Fill

Once the system is clean and cold, the liquid argon is condensed in the Argon Condenser. The clean and cold liquid argon leaving the condenser valve box is sent to the condenser pump and sent to the cryostat for cooldown and fill operations. Vendor to specify number of pumps required in parallel to start the pump stepper based on the pump performance curve. Vendor to specify optimal pump rotational speed to meet the mass flow requirement specified in Table 25-5.

8.2 Normal Operations

Liquid argon leaves the condenser from the bottom and into the pump where it circulates liquid argon back to the condenser through the Desuperheater. The vendor shall indicate proper configuration to decrease the differential pressure across the pumps to keep the required mass flow per Table 25-5.

Vendor to specify optimal pump rotational speed to also meet mass flow requirement specified in Table 25-5.

8.3 Bearing Replacement

Based on liquid argon pump manuals, each pump needs to replace bearings approximately each 6000 working hours. Supply shall be able to replace bearings on each pump without interruption of circulation process. Vendor to supply overhaul kits and spare impellers. Two overhaul kits per pump are required.

8.4 Maintenance

Each pump units shall be capable of a controlled warm-up/cool-down for maintenance without interfering with the pump capacity. Any of the pump units shall be capable of being taken out of service for maintenance while any combination of the other units remains in operation. One spare pump per cryostat required.

Statement of Work Modes of Operation for Circulation Pumps Units

Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) / Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) - US 9-14

2. Cryostat Fill Process

3. Normal operation.

4. Bearings replacement.

5. Maintenance

6. Purge and standby mode.

The proposed configuration uses 2 pumps in modular fashion. Vendor should specify performance of pumps running in parallel. The functional parameters should dictate the optimal number of pumps and their characteristics as long as requirements are met. Full redundancy is not required. One spare pump per cryostat is sufficient.

9.1 Supply Initial Purge and Cooldown

The Supply shall be cleaned up from air in the system, using cylinder argon gas for pump and backfilled of process line and pump space. After using pure argon from cryostat, purge the process lines and vent it, slowly cooldown the system.

9.2 Cryostat Fill

Once the system is clean and cold, vendor to specify number of pumps required in parallel to start the pump stepper based on the pump performance curve. Vendor to specify optimal pump rotational speed to meet the mass flow requirement specified in Table 25-4.

9.3 Normal Operations

During Normal operations, the pump configuration should have ability to decrease from 2 pumps to 1 pump by slowing the speed which shall decrease the differential pressure across the pump to keep the required mass flow per Table 25-4. Vendor to specify optimal pump rotational speed to also meet mass flow requirement specified in Table 25-4.

9.4 Bearing Replacement

Based on liquid argon pump manuals, each pump needs to replace bearings approximately each 6000 working hours. Supply shall be able to replace bearings on each pump without interruption of circulation process. Vendor to supply overhaul kits and spare impellers. Two overhaul kits per pump are required.
