About this file
This document is a Functional Requirements document for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Liquid Argon (LAr) Condenser Pump Units for Cryostats 1 and 2. It outlines the current interface requirements, technical requirements, and modes of operation for the condenser pump units.
The key details are:
- The LAr condenser pump units will be located inside the North/South Detector Cavern envelopes, with 6 pumps divided into 1 pump per condenser.
- The pumps must be designed for internal vacuum and 10 bar pressure, with an adiabatic efficiency greater than 0.5.
- The pumps will be used for cryostat fill, normal operations, bearing replacement, and maintenance activities. Redundancy is required to ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Key design parameters include a maximum working pressure of 145 psig (10 bar) and a temperature range of 87K (-186°C) to 310K (37°C).
- The required flow rate is 66 lb/min (98 g/s) per condenser during cryostat fill, and 132 lb/min (996 g/s) during normal operations.

1 Scope of Document This document describes the functional requirements for the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) Liquid Argon Condenser Pump Units for Cryostats 1 and 2.
2 Condenser Pump Unit Current Interface Requirements The LAr Condenser Pump units for the Cryostats shall be located inside spaces allocated in the North / South Detector Cavern envelopes where six (6) pumps are divided into one pump per condenser (see Figure 2-1).
Figure 2-1: Current Condenser Pump Unit Skid Typical Configuration (To be checked)
The current configuration is highlighted in Figure 2-2 below. The yellow highlighted section is the pumps themselves that show the 6 (six) condenser pumps that come off each condenser. The green highlighted sections are the upstream piping that is made of 2” vacuum jacketed piping coming from each condenser.
The blue highlighted sections are the downstream piping that is made of 1-1/2” vacuum jacketed piping that is utlized during LAr Purification where the gaseous argon boiloff is being sent back to condenser to be re-liquiefied. The pink highlighted section is the 1” vacuum jacketed manifold that is utlized during the cooldown of the cryostat where the liquid argon has been cooled and cleaned coming out of the condenser. The flow from this system merges with the flow from out of the circulation system common manifold. The combined flow goes to the CUC.
Figure 2-3 is a zoomed in version of the P&ID that better highlights the finer details per condenser pump.

3 Condenser Pump Technical Requirements
3.1 Each liquid argon condenser pumps shall be designed for internal vacuum and for a pressure of
10 bar at any temperature ranging from about 310 K to about 87 K (for the cool-down and warm-up processes).
3.2 The liquid argon condenser pumps shall each have an adiabatic efficiency higher than 0.5.
4 Modes of Operation for Condenser Pumps Units The Condenser Pumps units defined in this Functional Requirements document will be used for the following modes of operation:
1. Cryostat Fill
2. Normal Operations
3. Bearing Replacement
4. Maintenance
The current configuration uses 6 pumps in modular fashion. The functional parameters should dictate the optimal number of pumps and their characteristics as long as requirements are met. Redundancy shall be considered to ensure uninterrupted operations.
4.1 Cryostat Fill
When the system is clean and cold, the liquid argon is condensed in the Argon Condenser. The clean and cold liquid argon leaving the condenser valve box is sent to the condenser pump and sent to the cryostat for cooldown and fill operations.
4.2 Normal Operations
Liquid argon leaves the condenser from the bottom and into the pump where it circulates liquid argon back to the condenser through the Desuperheater.
4.3 Bearing Replacement
Based on liquid argon pump manuals, each pump needs to replace bearings approximately each 6000 working hours. Supply shall be able to replace bearings on each pump without interruption of circulation process.
4.4 Maintenance
Each pump units shall be capable of a controlled warm-up/cool-down for maintenance without interfering with the pump capacity. Any of the pump units shall be capable of being taken out of service for maintenance while any combination of the other units remains in operation.
