HANSEN FLOOD-CONTROL BASIN
LOS MGELES, C a m m u
SECTION 1
1-01, Authorbation. Hanaen flood-control basin, which was constructed under authorhation of the Flood Control Act of 22 June 1936 (as amended), was incorporated in to the comprehensive plan of improvement for the control of floods in the Los b g e l e s drainage area by the Flood Control Act of 18 August 19u.
1-02. Location, The Hausen Flood-Control Basin is located on the northern edge of the San Fernando Valley on Tujunga Wash just below the confluence of Big and Li t t l e Tujunga Creeks. Tujunga Wash follows i n a w r a l southerly direction as a poorly defined natural channel across San Fernando Valley t o the Los Angeles River. The Hansen dam s i t e is locrated about one mile below the junction of Big end Little Tujunga Creeks, and &ou% four miles west of the town of Sunland. The boundary of catcherit area is formed by the San Gabrielllountains on the north and west, and b y t h e Verdugo Mountains and a secondmy range of the San Gabriel H o u n t a i m on the south and east, The location of the project 3.s shown on exhibit A, 1-03. Description of project.
a, Description of drahae:e ares. The &ahage system a b m the dam s i t e has an area of l47.b square miles, consisting of
- nearly all relatively steep mountainous terrain and comparatively WAle flat valley f loor , The natural water~hed is about miles long, irregular in shape, and is varying from 5* t o 9 miles in width, Elevations vary from about 6,000 f ee t a t the upper east edge of the e watershed, and 2,000 fee t at the west edge, t o 980 feet a t the dam s i t e , The highest point in the drainage system is Gleason Peak having an elevation of 6,503 feet.
b, Principal structures and damr (2) - -out1e-b stmcture consisting of an approach channel, and-intala structure with tower and control house, eight gated outlets with gates and hoistihg equipment, two ungated outlets, a standby power unit, a service bridge, connecting the control house and vent house, and an outlet channel; (3) an ogee spillway; and (b) a dam tender's house, o or drawin s f i l e nwmbers of Hamen Dam9 see index t o drawings, exhibit F 7 c, Hydrowaphic installationse Hydrographic installa-t i o m include: (1) a slope gage; (2) a series of ver"ccal staff
(3) a water-stage recorder; (4) a gage height indicator;
g ~ L i g h f i gate position recorders; (6 ) three gate position indicators; (7) a standard glass tnbe rain gage; (8) an automatic rain gage; (9) an outflow gagfng station; and (10) a number of sediment monumentse o or description of hydrographic installations, see Sec-bion 8)
d. Coxuraunication fac i l i t i e s , Communioation f ac i l f t i es include a radio transmittine: and receiving station. tele~hones a t the' control house and the dasn t;ndert s house ~ e r r l c e d ib the' pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company, and phones between the operating house and the gate chanibers which are battery operated, (FOP description, see Section 9)
1-04. Protection provided. The Hansen Flood-Contsol Basin is a.11 essential unit in the IT. So hgineer Department General Plan fo r flood control in, the Los hge l e s River dra&aee basin, In conjunc-t ion with Sepulveda and Lopes, the basin is essential for flood protection of lower portions of San Fe-do Valley, the c i ty of Los Angeles, and all of the c i t i e s and intervening terr i tory located near the Los Angeles River between the c i ty of Los Angeles and the Pacif i o Ocean a t Long Beach. Storage regulation given by the flood control basins p d t e efficient operations of the Los Angeles River channel, LSe Basic design r0-t~~ A pre- hyd~ology report was made in Decdber 1936 entitled *Hydrology of the Los Angeles and Rio Hondo Rive~s* being revised in 1939 t o include the influenae and data sf the &ch 1938 flood, llAnalysis of Design of Tujunga %sh Improv81llen-t - Hansen Damn - volume I and 11, dated 2 May 1938 was superseded by volume III, dated 1 June 1940, An ~ A r d y s i s of Design of 5 feet by 8 fee t Service Gates fo r Hamen Dam" was issued January 1939, and an nanalysis of Hydraulic Design for Haasen Flood Control Basinn w a s issued 18 Pbch 1940~

3-01. Flood control basin, The flood control basin (or reservoir) was created by the coiastruction of ail ear t ISi l l dam across fijunga Nash a t a s i t e about 9,h miles upstream from i ts junction with the Eos Angeles River and 1s miles north 02 Los hgs les , The cwgacity of the reservo5.r a t spillway crest is 33,500 acre-fee%, e 3-02. Dams. The dam is a compac-bed impervious earth-fi l l structure. approximately 10,475 fee t long a t the creqt (elevation 1,087.0). The maxlrmun helght above streambed is 97 feet. It extends i n a general east and west direction a t r ight ang&s t o Wunga Wash, The a s of the dam follows a gentle curve in order t o connect the abuhents of the d m with a prominent rock Pnssa located near the canter of the dam s i t e , A t %he east end %he dam abuts against the hills, while on the west end the dam terminates oil a gently sloping h i l l .
Rock is exposed on the hi l ls ide at the east abutment and is found a t shallow depths en the west abutment, Between the ends of the darh and the central rock mesa the axis of the dam crosses tlie lower end of a ty r ica l debris cone.
