About this file
This document is an Industry Day presentation for the Construction of Thayer Hall, a demolition and new construction project at the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point. The Industry Day was held on August 6, 2026, in West Point, NY.
Thayer Hall is a historically significant academic building originally constructed as a Riding Hall in 1909-1911 and converted to an academic building in the post-World War II period. The structure is approximately 350,000 square feet across four stories and is a contributing building within the West Point National Historic Landmark District. The renovation project will involve full demolition of the interior steel frame and selective retention of historic masonry elements while constructing a new academic facility. Key program spaces include department offices, classroom and hands-on learning environments, three auditoriums (large, medium, and small), collaboration spaces, libraries, and support functions distributed across seven levels. The new building will accommodate departments including Behavioral Science & Leadership, English & World Languages, Law & Philosophy, History & War Studies, and Social Sciences. Major design challenges include coordination of existing and new foundations, complex shoring and bracing requirements, maintenance of utilities serving adjacent buildings (Jefferson Hall, Lincoln Hall, Cullum Hall, West Point Club), protection of underground CSX rail tunnels with vibration monitoring, rock anchoring and stabilization on the site's dramatic bluff overlooking the Hudson River, and preservation of historic architectural elements including carved stone lettering, decorative eagle and shield emblems, arched window openings, and period doors and hardware through selective salvage and reuse. The project requires careful management of site accessibility through constrained routes, staging across multiple locations (River Courts, D Lot, and Transfer Station), and protection of adjacent wetlands and River Courts facilities.
