SECTION 17180 - DOOR CONTROL SYSTEMS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1

SUMMARY

A.

This section covers the door control system as shown on the drawings or as required to support the systems defined in these specifications. The work under this section consists of furnishing materials and equipment, performing labor and services necessary for the installation of the door control system required for the security electronics, communications, and fire alarm system.

B.

Related Work Specified Elsewhere: Refer to all other Division 17 specification sections and drawings, and to the specifications and drawings under the General

Construction Contract to ascertain the extent of work included.

1.2

SUBMITTALS

A.

Since the Division 17 systems must be reviewed by the Contracting Officer as a system, no individual, specific submittal shall be made for this section.

Submittals shall be packaged in groups and shall be made in accordance with the General Provisions (Section 17000) of these specifications.

B.

When making the submittal as required by Section 17000, include this additional information.

1.

Submit hardwired relay interlock wiring diagrams, where applicable.

2.

1.3

REFERENCES AND/OR CODES:

A.

National Electrical Code

1.4

COORDINATION:

A.

Coordinate with specific hardware used by Division 8 and Division 11 for security hardware and builders hardware to ensure that the specified hardware can perform the functions and operations required by this section, Section 17100 and Section 17170. Provide written notification to the Contracting Officer of any discrepancy between the Division 17 requirements and the Division 8 and

Division 11 electric door hardware requirements.

B.

Coordinate with Division 8 and Division 11 to ensure that a fully open signal is provided at all sliding doors and gates.

1.5

SYSTEMS DESCRIPTION:

A.

Door control system shall be controlled by the Central Control Programmable

Logic Controller which shall accept the various inputs from systems being interfaced with door control, cause operation as described in this Section and

DOOR CONTROL SYSTEMS 17180-2

elsewhere in the documents and provide outputs to the various systems.

Electrically operated doors are listed in the schedule in this Section. This schedule indicates the type of door hardware and the electrical interlocks.

B.

Definitions: The following definitions of functions or indications shall apply to the descriptions contained herein.

1.

"Secure" The door is closed and locked. This is effected by monitoring the deadlock switch and the door position switch.

2.

"Open" The door is not "Secure".

3.

"Fully Open" The door is in the fully open position and is not "Secure".

This is effected by monitoring the a dedicated limit switch in the sliding door hardware.

4.

"Locked" The status of a locking device when the roller bolt is retracted and the latch bolt is fully extended. The device will not be locked until the door is closed.

5.

"Unlocked" The status of a locking device when the latch bolt is partially or fully retracted.

6.

"Lock" Control power is applied to or removed from, the locking device as required to effect a "locked" mode. The nature of the locking signal or sequence is determined by the specific locking device.

7.

"Unlock" Control power is applied to the locking device to place the device in an "unlocked" mode. Control may be by momentary or continuous application of power as dictated by the locking device.

8.

"Interlock" Interlocked doors will be electrically controlled so that only a single door in the interlock group can be opened at one time.

C.

Door Control System Functional Description:

1.

The control and monitoring functions of all electrically operated and or monitored doors and gates shall be initiated or interpreted by the

Programmable Logic Controllers.

2.

All doors and gates shall be locally controlled via door control relays.

The relays shall be of the types, sizes, and ratings required for compatibility with applicable door hardware sets. Door control relays shall be mounted in Security & Communications Cabinets (SCC).

3.

All door control relays shall be activated from the PLC output modules.

4.

For a controlled swing door, the door position and the dead lock switches shall be monitored via discrete inputs to the PLC input modules. For a monitored or alarmed swing door, the door position and bolt position switches shall be monitored via discrete inputs to the PLC input modules.

DOOR CONTROL SYSTEMS 17180-3

There shall be two inputs for each door. The PLC shall monitor both inputs to determine if the door is secure or non-secure.

5.

All of the monitoring circuits shall be closed when the door is secure.

Where interposing relays are used to separate Class 1 from Class 2 monitoring circuits the relays shall be wired so that the contacts that are monitored by the PLC are closed only when the door is secure.

Interlock:

1.

Function:

a.

The combination of the dead lock switch and the door position indicator switch controls an interlock with the control panel/touch screen. When the door is in the unlocked or open position, the door control logic circuits shall inhibit any other door in the interlock group from being unlocked or opened. The interlock shall not prevent a door from being closed or relocked.

In addition, to prevent the simultaneous operation of the door locks when the switches are operated simultaneously, the other outputs in the interlock group shall be inhibited when an unlock output is activated. See Table 17180-3 for the interlocked door schedule.

b.

The interlock function for facility perimeter doors and gates shall be affected with hardwired relay logic and software logic. All other interlocks shall be affected by software interlocks only.

L.
