About this file

This is a resource guide for the Army Transition Assistance Program (TAP) focused on Individualized Initial Counseling (IIC), published in April 2025. The guide serves as an informational document for transitioning military service members and their families, providing information about available transition resources, counseling services, and career planning tools rather than outlining contractual requirements or solicitation details.

The guide details TAP's comprehensive offerings, which include pre-separation counseling, a core curriculum covering five mandatory modules (Managing Your Transition, MOC Crosswalk, Financial Planning for Transition, DOL Employment Fundamentals, and VA Benefits and Services), specialized career tracks (Education, Employment, Vocational, Entrepreneurship), and additive classes such as resume writing and interview techniques. Key resources and programs highlighted include the Joint Services Transcript (JST) at https://jst.doded.mil/jst, DoDTAP portal at https://dodtap.mil/dodtap/app/home for accessing Verification of Military Experience and Training (VMET), Career OneStop at https://www.careeronestop.org/, RecruitMilitary's Tactical Connection Program at RMvets.com/WelcomeTAP, DoD SkillBridge program, the Army Career Skills Program (CSP), and Unemployment Compensation for Ex-servicemembers (UCX). The document establishes a transition timeline beginning 18 months before separation through the transition date, with mandatory Individualized Initial Counseling occurring 365 days prior to separation. The guide also includes an Individual Transition Plan (ITP) framework organized into three sections addressing personal/family requirements, evaluation of military experience and training, and post-transition career track determination. The document includes placeholder sections for local installation contact information, TAP leadership details, and installation-specific resources.

The goal is to connect transitioning Soldiers with local resources and employers in the community they will reside in post-transition to obtain meaningful employment. Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve

Army TAP Centers enable Face-to-Face and virtual events during which transitioning Soldiers can meet formally with employers offering jobs, which may fit the Soldiers’ skills, experience, and desires. Contact your local TAP office today and ask about their next Hiring Event

If you are preparing for transition, ask yourself the following three questions and prioritize what is most important to you:

Where do you and your family want to live?

What career do you want to pursue?

What is your desired income?

INDIVIDUAL TRANSITION PLAN (ITP)

The key to a successful transition is planning, which requires a carefully thought-out Individual Transition Plan (ITP).

The ITP provides a framework to achieve realistic career goals based upon an assessment of your personal and family needs as well as your unique skills, knowledge, experience, interests and abilities.

• Taking Care of Individual/Family Needs

• Assessing Benefits and Entitlements
