3.1.5 General Description, Polar Class Ice Breaker, Propeller and Shaft Handling Equipment.
The equipment consists of three major components: a tractor, a propeller handling pallet, and a shaft-handling trailer. A general description of each component follows:
Tractor: The tractor is a diesel electric powered industrial lift truck. The arrangement of the tractor is depicted in drawing DE-321; "Outline of Tractor". Hydraulic power for the tractor lift platform, the propeller pallet and shaft trailer is supplied by a common hydraulic system on the tractor and is powered by a pump driven by the tractor generator. The tractor is self-propelled and moves at a speed of approximately two-miles per hour. The tractor has a lift capacity of 120,000-pounds. Extreme caution should be exercised when maneuvering the tractor on any incline. Approximate dimensional data follows: weight = 73,800-lbs., length = 21.75-ft, width = 8.00-ft, and height = 12.00-ft.
Propeller Pallet: The propeller pallet is a platform with two hydraulically positionable uprights with bearing saddles contoured to fit the Polar Class Icebreaker propeller hubs. Both uprights have axial, transverse and vertical degrees of freedom. Rollers in the saddles permit manual rotation of propellers while in the saddles. The saddles may be interchanged between uprights or removed entirely to permit use of other saddles fitting propellers of smaller size. The unit is not powered and must be used in conjunction with the tractor defined above, both for transportation (on the tractor lifting platform) and for hydraulic power to position the uprights. The propeller pallet is illustrated in drawing; "DE-320; Propeller Handling Gear Concept Drawing".
