Specification and discussion of (15m) Lighting pole

Manufacture and Test report for the pole

● The pole is made of high-quality carbon steel (Q235/S355)

Q235 standard: steel is a Chinese GB standard plain carbon structural steel, and divided into 4 quality grades: Q235A, Q235B, Q235C and Q235D, material density is

7.85 g/cm3, tensile strength is from 370 to 500 MPa, and yield strength is 235 MPa (data are for steel bar or steel plate diameter ≤ 16mm). The latest standard of steel Q235 is GB/T 700 – 2006.

S355 structural steel plate is a high-strength, low-alloy European standard structural steel covering four of the six "Parts" within the EN 10025 – 2004 standard. With a minimum yield of 50,000 KSI, it meets requirements in chemistry and physical properties similar to ASTM A572 / 709. Careful attention should always be placed on the specific variation of S355 required if considering substitute material.

● Welding of steel

PA-8018-C3 is a 1% nickel, low hydrogen, iron powder electrode used for welding high strength steels in the 70-80,000 psi tensile strength range. This electrode offers high deposition efficiency, producing an excellent quality of weld deposits with good impact properties even at temperatures as low as -60°C. PA-8018-C3 is also used for fillet welds on high strength quenched and tempered steels such as ASTM A514 and A517. PA-8018- C3 may be used in any position with AC or DC (reverse polarity).

● Galvanize of Steel

The pole galvanized within the ASTM 123 requirements, the coating thickness not less than 80-85µ.

Hot-Dip Galvanizing Process

The galvanizing process consists of three basic steps: surface preparation, galvanizing, and inspection.

*Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is the most important step in the application of any coating. In most instances where a coating fails before the end of its expected service life, it is because of incorrect or inadequate surface preparation. The surface preparation step in the galvanizing process has its own built-in means of quality control because zinc simply will not react with unclean steel. Any failures or inadequacies in surface preparation will be immediately apparent when the steel is withdrawn from the zinc bath because the unclean areas will remain uncoated, and immediate corrective action can be taken.

● Surface preparation consists of three steps:

1- Degreasing - A hot alkali solution, mild acidic bath, or biological cleaning bath removes organic contaminants such as dirt, paint markings, grease, and oil from the metal surface.

Epoxies, vinyl’s, asphalt, or welding slag, which cannot be removed by degreasing, must be removed before galvanizing by grit-blasting, sandblasting, or other mechanical means.

2- Pickling - A dilute solution of heated sulfuric acid or ambient hydrochloric acid removes mill scale and iron oxides (rust) from the steel surface. As an alternative to or in conjunction with pickling, this step can also be accomplished using abrasive cleaning or air blasting sand, metallic shot, or grit onto the steel.

3- Fluxing the final surface preparation step, a zinc ammonium chloride solution, serves two purposes. It removes any remaining oxides and deposits a protective layer on the steel to prevent any further oxides from forming on the surface prior to immersion in the molten zinc.

*Immersion into Zinc Bath

Galvanizing is when the steel is immersed in a bath of molten zinc

The true “galvanizing” phase of the process consists of completely immersing the steel in a minimum 98% pure zinc bath. The bath temperature is maintained at 815 F (435 C) or higher. The steel is lowered at an angle by crane hoist. This allows air to escape from tubular shapes or pockets that may be within the design of a fabricated piece and of course, permits the molten zinc to displace the air.

While immersed in the kettle, the zinc reacts with iron in the steel to form a series of zinc-iron inter-metallic alloy layers. Once the fabricated item reaches bath temperature the coating growth is complete, and the articles are withdrawn slowly from the galvanizing bath. Excess zinc is removed by draining, vibrating, and/or centrifuging. The metallurgical reaction will continue after withdrawal from the bath, as long as the article remains near bath temperature. Articles are cooled either by immersion in a passivation solution or water or by being left in the open air.

3 | Page

*Inspection

Visual and Technical Inspection

The last phase of the process, inspection, is simple and quick. The two properties of the hot-dip galvanized coating closely scrutinized are coating thickness and coating appearance.

A very accurate determination as to the quality of the galvanized coating can be accomplished through a visual inspection of the material, because as stated earlier zinc will not react with unclean steel. A variety of simple physical and laboratory tests may also be performed to determine thickness, uniformity, adherence, and appearance to ensure the coating is in compliance with specification requirements. Products are galvanized according to long-established, accepted, and approved standards of ASTM.

● Finishing and Paint

The Coating is made of high quality outdoor Penguard Primer (JOTUN)/ And Silver

Metallic (Nitro Cellulose Enamel LWD140318-709) finish paint.

Penguard Primer Product description This is a two component, polyamide cured, high molecular weight epoxy coating. Designed as a primer for new Construction. Can be used as primer as a part of a complete system in atmospheric and immersed environments.

Suitable for properly prepared carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, concrete, galvanized steel, shop primed steel and thermally sprayed zinc substrates.

The provided data is typical for factory produced products, subject to slight variation depending on color.

➢ Static calculation of total weight load result of wind speed

V = Velocity of wind = 44.4m/s (160Km/h)

The simple formula for wind pressure P in units (N/𝑚2) is:

P= 0.613*𝑉2 = 0.613* (44.42) = 1.21*103 N/𝑚2

Calculates the wind load on a specific object, 𝐴𝑎 = projected area of the object = 26.90 𝑚2 P = wind pressure = 1.21*103 𝐶𝑑= drag coefficient = 1.2

F = 𝐴𝑎 x P x 𝐶𝑑 = 26.90*1.21*103*1.2 = 39.06*103 N

As Known: 1Kg = 9.81 N

𝑊𝑏 = 39.06*103/9.81 = 3.981*103 Kg

Calculation of Total load:

X = 𝑊𝑎 + 𝑊𝑏 = 778.20 + 3981 = 4,759.20 Kg

➢ The strength grad of section in the base of the pole:

Calculate the area of the section of the bottom section of the pole:

𝐴4= 3.14*257(mm)*4(mm)= 3.227*103 m𝑚2

Quadrant of the section:

𝐴𝑏=𝐴4/4= 806.75 𝑚𝑚2

From the Carbon steel standard (Strength grad= 400N/𝑚𝑚2):

Each 1𝑚𝑚2 Can withstand tensile strength by 400N

F= 𝐴𝑏*Strength grad = 806.75*400 = 322.7*103 N

As Known: 1Kg = 9.81 N

Y = 322.7*103 /9.81 =32.90*103 Kg

➢ Conclusion of Wind resistance

X: The Value of total weight load result of Wind speed: 4,759.20 Kg

Y: The Value of strength grad in the base of the pole: 32,900.00 Kg

X is smaller than Y, the design is acceptable and designed to against the speed of the wind.
