Benefield Anechoic Facility (BAF) As a DoD asset, the BAF is the largest anechoic chamber in the world.
The BAF possesses instrumentation and utilities to operate and evaluate avionics systems (signals, control functions) in strategic and cargo-sized aircraft.
Testing also includes single/multiple tactical-sized air/space vehicles.
BAF Physical Layout (chamber) 264 Ft L X 250 Ft W X 70 Ft H Two 40-ton hoists 175-ton 80-ft diameter turntable (One-of-a-kind capability) Power, Cooling (air and liquid), Hydraulics available Quiet Zone Isolation (Typical)
| 500 MHz* | ≥ 72dB | |
| 1.0 GHz | ≥ 84dB | |
| 2.0 GHz | ≥ 96dB | |
| 3.0-18.0 GHz | ≥ 100dB |
* Below 500 MHz special techniques are used to optimize range for use with specific SUT for antenna patterns and isolation tests RF Shielding Effectiveness To/from outside environment ≥ 100dB

EMI/EMC
Secure test environment for sensitive signals (SAP, SCI, war reserve modes) Credible “pedigree” Instrumentation
Cont.
EW/IO Systems Test The AFTC RF ISTF infrastructure supports T&E requirements of diverse RF systems Electronic Warfare (EW) / Information Operations (I/O) Radar Warning Receivers Electronic Support
SIGINT/ELINT/COMINT/MASINT
Electronic Attack (EA) (Jammers) Radar systems Antenna systems for all types of avionics and systems Data Links and Satellite Communications
Manned and Unmanned Systems!
Nearly “Anything RF” Can Benefit – An asset to EW/IO
Applicable T&E Requirements These facilities are used to satisfy a significant variety of today’s systems’ test requirements such as:
Situational awareness – dense electromagnetic environment (EME) Threat detection, identification, processing and response Angle of arrival (AOA) or direction finding (DF) measurements Jammer system functionality Antenna performance – patterns, beam forming, beam steering Sub-systems interoperability/compatibility testing Intra- and intersystem isolation Suitability Minimum discernable signal measurements and other RF characterization Supplement OAR when range assets or time are not available
Mitigates Surprises at the OAR or Operationally
Overall 412 EWG EWIC Requirements Improvement and Modernization (I&M) upgrade/development programs Support the research and development (R&D) and procurement of capability enhancements to this environment increased simulator fidelity Increased signal density throughout the electromagnetic spectrum improving efficiencies with regard to real-time test execution, environment monitoring techniques, and data capture and processing 772 TS requires continuous improvement in test methodologies and development of EW test capabilities in order to maintain its posture as the Center of Excellence (COE) for EW T&E

Improvement & Modernization (I&M) Current Support on Infrastructure Programs Current Test Infrastructure Programs ADTRA (Advanced Dynamic Transmit Array) NEWEG (Next Generation Electronic Warfare Environment Generator) RAGE (Radar Air to Ground Environment) MSTC (Mission System Test Capability) EWTCIP (Electronic Warfare Test Capability Improvement Program) 5GATE (5th Generation Aerial Target Environment) JAMMER/ECM (Closed Loop High Fidelity Threat Radar)
Upcoming Test Infrastructure Programs LB-EFS (Low Band – Extended Free Space) ULB – EFS (Ultra Low Band – Extended Free Space) mmW (Millimeter Wave)
Current Projects ADTRA: Advanced Dynamic Transmit Array The capabilities introduced by ADTRA will provide the RF environment necessary to test, evaluate, and to validate the performance of installed systems such as advanced radar warning receivers, electronic support measures and jammers being integrated on current and future weapons systems.
Design and Production of a Free Space radiation cart utilizing an Active Electronic Scanned Array (AESA)
Current Projects NEWEG: Next-Generation Electronic Warfare Environment Generator The NEWEG will provide the next generation threat simulator to meet AF future test requirements.
NEWEG will provide a high fidelity simulation capability design that supports essential survivability testing to our existing and future weapons systems.
Threat simulator will feed digital signals to ADTRA and future carts for free space radiation.
RAGE: Radar Air-to-Ground Environment Projects resolves several current Navy and Air Force radar testing shortfalls by providing a high-fidelity virtual battlespace simulation compatible with modern radar systems installed on tactical and surveillance aircraft platforms.
RAGE addresses four key capability gaps for the test and evaluation (T&E) of airborne radar systems.
Air-to-Air (A/A) Air-Ground Range (A/G) Radar Cross-Section (RCS) Radar Signal Modulation (RSM)
MSTC: Mission Systems Test Capability Mission Systems simulation for the 4th and 5th generation aircraft and test capability for Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL) to enable interoperability and integration testing of new data links and waveforms.
EWTCIP: Electronic Warfare Test Capability Improvement Program Integration efforts of newly developed capabilities into the BAF.
New with Existing New with New Develop the subsystems needed to integrate new capabilities Develop subsystem for calibration of free space carts
5GATE: 5th Generation Aerial Target Environment Test capabilities applicable to the 5th generation battle environment BAF infrastructure upgrade for radio frequency simulation
JAMMER/ECM: Closed Loop High Fidelity Threat Radar Provides signal measurement capability targeted to ECM testing, as well as ECM analysis capability in a realistic threat environments.
Provide near real time jammer analysis software to assess jammer performance.
Provide the ability to ground test agile multi-beam jammers to include multiple simultaneous jam
Upcoming Projects LB-EFS: Low Band Extended Free Space Cart The Low Band Extended Free Space Cart (LB-EFS) is basically an ADTRA cart with a new array design.
LB-EFS carts will be integrated into existing ADTRA system configuration.
ULB-EFS
Ultra Low Band Extended Free Space Cart mmW Millimeter Wave Free Space Cart

Are we sure that the wheel in the lower left corner is the no kidding “warfighter” way of describing the process (e.g. is it really “find, fix, track, target, engage and assess”). Or is this some “labby” guy’s semantical way of thinking through it? Otherwise a very nice picture—thanks.
