• Occupied Bandwidth: The width of a frequency band such that, below the lower and above the upper frequency limits, the mean powers emitted are each equal to a specified percentage of the total mean power of a given emission. 2/β
• Unless otherwise specified by the ITU-R Recommendation for the appropriate class of emission, the value of should be taken as 0.5%. 2/β
• Necessary Bandwidth: For a given class of emission, the width of the frequency band which is just sufficient to ensure the transmission of information at the rate and with the quality required under specified conditions. (NTIA Manual Annex J contains formulas used to calculate necessary bandwidth.)
Emission Bandwidth Definitions
Emission Designator Breakdown
First Four Characters: Identify the necessary bandwidth required to transmit the desired information at the rate and with the quality required for the system to operate
Fifth Character: Identifies the type of modulation of the main carrier
Sixth Character: Identifies the nature of signals(s) modulating the main carrier
Seventh Character: Identifies the type of information that is to be transmitted
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
6 K 0 0 A 3 E
Seven Characters of the Emission Designator
• Decimal point is replaced with unit of Hertz (H, K, M, G)
• Between .001 and 999 Hz = H
• Between 1.00 and 999 KHz = K
• Between 1.00 and 999 MHz = M
• Between 1.00 and 999 GHz = G
