About this file
This is a material specification document for Granular Base Course (GCA) that establishes requirements for aggregate materials used in federal construction projects in compliance with Uniform Guide Specifications (UFGS) 32.11.23.
GCA materials must consist of clean, sound, durable particles such as crushed stone or angular sand, free of silt and clay per ASTM D247 standards. Crushed recycled concrete (RCA) is an acceptable aggregate alternative provided it derives from previously handled portland cement or pozzolanic concrete, maintains required gradation specifications, and contains no reinforcing steel, bituminous surfacing, or foreign materials. Material passing through the No. 40 sieve must have a maximum Liquid limit of 25 and Plasticity index of 5. GCA loss must not exceed 40 percent when tested per ASTM C131/C131. Gradation requirements specify precise percentage ranges by weight passing various sieve sizes: 1 inch (100%), ½ inch (40-70%), No. 4 (20-50%), No. 10 (15-40%), No. 40 (5-25%), and No. 200 (0-8%). Acceptance is determined by compliance with defined tolerances for grade (¼ inch minus ½ inch), smoothness (±3/8 inches), individual test thickness (±½ inches), average job thickness (±¼ inches), and compaction at a minimum of 100%. Non-compliant material must be removed and replaced with compliant material meeting specification requirements.

GCA Material Specification:
GCA will conform to the Uniform Guide Specifications (UFGS) 32.11.23
GCA consists of clean, sound, durable particles of crashed stone, angular sand, or other such approved materials. Stock must be free of silt and clay as defined by ASTM D247
Crushed recycled concrete (RCA) is permitted for aggregate. RCA must consist of previously handled portland cement concrete or other concrete containing pozzolanic binder material. RCA must be consistent with gradation requirements and free of all reinforcing steel, bituminous concrete surfacing, and any other foreign materials.
The maximum Liquid limit and Plasticity index of material passing through N. 40 sieve is 25 and 5 respectively.
Limit the percentage of loss of GCA to a maximum of 40 percent when tested in accordance with
ASTM C131/C131
Gradation by percentage must follow the specifications in Table 1:
Table1: Percentage By Weight Passing Square – Mesh Sieve 1 inch 100 ½ inch 40-70 No. 4 20-50 N. 10 15-40 No. 40 5-25
No. 200 0-8
Acceptance of GCA is based on compliance with tolerance present in Table 2. Remove any material found to be non-compliance and replace with compliant material to meet requirements of this specification.
Table 2: Compliance Tolerances Grade Plus, ¼ inch, minus ½ inch
Smoothness Plus/Minus 3/8 inches Individual Test Toal
Thickness Plus/Minus ½ inches
Average Job Thickness Plus/Minus ¼ inches Compaction Minimum 100%
