About this file

This is a material specification attachment for Aggregate Base Course (GCA) used in federal construction projects. GCA shall conform to Uniform Guide Specifications (UFGS) 32.11.23 and ASSHTO #57 standards. The material must consist of clean, sound, durable particles of crushed stone, angular sand, or other approved materials, and must be free of silt and clay as defined by ASTM D247.

The specification establishes strict material quality requirements including maximum Liquid Limit and Plasticity Index values of 25 and 5 respectively for material passing the No. 40 sieve, and a maximum loss of 40 percent when tested per ASTM C131/C131. Gradation requirements by weight passing square-mesh sieves are: 1 inch (100%), ½ inch (40-70%), No. 4 (20-50%), No. 10 (15-40%), No. 40 (5-25%), and No. 200 (0-8%). Compliance tolerances for acceptance include Grade specifications of plus ¼ inch minus ½ inch, smoothness of plus/minus 3/8 inches, individual test total thickness of plus/minus ½ inches, average job thickness of plus/minus ¼ inches, and minimum compaction of 100%. Any material found to be non-compliant must be removed and replaced with compliant material meeting all specification requirements.

Attachment 2 - GCA Material Specification:

GCA will conform to the Uniform Guide Specifications (UFGS) 32.11.23 and the equivalent American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (ASSHTO) #57

GCA consists of clean, sound, durable particles of crashed stone, angular sand, or other such approved materials. Stock must be free of silt and clay as defined by ASTM D247

The maximum Liquid limit and Plasticity index of material passing through N. 40 sieve is 25 and 5 respectively.

Limit the percentage of loss of GCA to a maximum of 40 percent when tested in accordance with

ASTM C131/C131

Gradation by percentage must follow the specifications in Table 1:

Table1: Percentage By Weight Passing Square – Mesh Sieve 1 inch 100 ½ inch 40-70 No. 4 20-50 N. 10 15-40 No. 40 5-25

No. 200 0-8

Acceptance of GCA is based on compliance with tolerance present in Table 2. Remove any material found to be non-compliance and replace with compliant Material to meet requirements of this specification.

Table 2: Compliance Tolerances Grade Plus, ¼ inch, minus ½ inch

Smoothness Plus/Minus 3/8 inches Individual Test Toal

Thickness Plus/Minus ½ inches

Average Job Thickness Plus/Minus ¼ inches Compaction Minimum 100%
