SUBMITTALS 50
Submit Shop Drawings in accordance with Section 1B, Shop Drawings/Submittals. Include details of each frame 52 type, conditions at openings, details of construction, location and installation requirements of finish hardware and 53 reinforcements, and details of joints and connections. Show anchorage and accessory items. 54
DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING 56
Frames shall be shipped with angle spreaders at door opening bottoms. Frames shall be stored on the building 58 site, in an upright position, under cover, on wood sills or floors, in a manner that will prevent rust or damage. 59
112-006 08100-2
Ventilate canvas or plastic to prevent moisture traps. 1 Inspect hollow metal work upon delivery for damage. Minor damage may be repaired provided items are equal in 3 all respects to new work and acceptable to the Government Construction Representative. Rejected work shall be 4 replaced with new items. 5
B. PRODUCTS 7
MATERIALS 9
Steel sheets shall be cold-rolled, commercial quality carbon steel complying with ASTM A 366 and ASTM A 568. 11 Fabricate supports and anchors of not less than 18-gauge galvanized sheet steel unless otherwise noted. 13 Inserts, bolts and fasteners shall be the manufacturer's standard units, except hot-dip galvanized items shall be 15 built into exterior walls, complying with ASTM A 153, Class C or D as applicable. 16 Shop-applied primer for all doors, frames, and related accessories shall be rust-inhibitive enamel or paint, either 18 air-dried or baked, suitable as a base for specified finish paints listed in Section 09900. 19 Unless otherwise indicated, provide countersunk flat Phillips heads for exposed screws and bolts. 21
HOLLOW METAL FRAMES 23
Provide metal frames for doors, transoms, sidelights, borrowed lights, and other openings of types and styles as 25 shown on the Drawings and Schedules. Conceal fastenings, unless otherwise indicated. 26 Fabricate frames and associated members from 14-gauge (hot-dipped galvanized at exterior frames), cold-rolled 27 steel. 28 Frame corners for the three-sided door frames shall be die-mitered with frame face continuously welded and 30 ground smooth. Continuously back weld soffit and rabbets. Frame corners for transom, sidelight, and borrowed 31 light frames shall be saw-mitered or butt joint. Intermediate rail connections shall be coped and let into adjacent 32 members and all corners and connections shall be face welded and ground smooth. 33 Prepare stops to receive three door silencers on strike jambs of frames on single-leaf doors and two silencers on 35 heads of frames on double-leaf doors. Silencers shall be type GJ64 manufactured by Glynn Johnson. Silencers 36 shall not be omitted at doors scheduled to receive sound strips or weatherstripping. Silencers shall be furnished 37 under Section 08700. 38 Stops shall be 5/8-inch high unless noted otherwise on the Drawings or required to achieve specified fire ratings. 40 Jamb anchors shall be adjustable, 16-gauge corrugated steel, permanently fastened to the frame for setting into 42 masonry partitions, or standard steel stud anchors for metal stud/gypsum board partitions. Each jamb shall be 43 anchored to the floor with an adjustable base anchor. Other types of anchors shall be provided when required for 44 other conditions. Provide a minimum of three anchors per jamb for frames up to 90 inches high and four anchors 45 per jamb for frames over 90 inches high. 46
FABRICATION 48
Fabricate metal frame units to be rigid, neat in appearance and free from defects, warp or buckle. Wherever 50 practicable, fit and assemble units in manufacturer's plant. 51 Welds shall be ground invisible and depressions shall be filled smooth. 53 Undercut doors 3/4-inch to clear carpet where carpet is indicated in the Room Finish Schedule. FINISH HARDWARE PREPARATION 1
Prepare doors and frames to receive mortised and concealed finish hardware in accordance with final Finish 3 Hardware Schedule and templates provided by hardware supplier. Comply with the applicable requirements of 4 ANSI A115 Series Specifications for door and frame preparation for hardware. 5 Frames shall be mortised, reinforced, drilled and tapped for scheduled mortised hardware. 7 Reinforce frames to receive surface-applied hardware. Drilling and tapping for surface-applied finish hardware 9 may be done at project site. 10
FRAME HINGE REINFORCEMENT 12
-All doors provide high-frequency hinge reinforcement at top hinge only. 14
ADDITIONAL FRAME REQUIREMENTS 16
1. Install 1-inch x 2-inch x length required foam insulation where grouted frames must be penetrated by 18 machine or sheet metal screws for attachment of closers, rim panic strikes, or jamb up weatherstrip. 19 Attach securely with tape or adhesive as required. 20
2. Apply "Rusco Permanent Sealer" to soffits, stops, and rabbets of corner joints at all exterior frames before 21 final primer coat is applied. 22
3. Plaster guard covers shall be welded in place over all drilled reinforcements of frames. 23
SHOP PAINTING 25
Clean steel surfaces of mill scale, rust, oil, grease, dirt, and other foreign materials before application of paint. 27 Apply shop coat of prime paint of even consistency to all doors and frames to provide a uniform and smooth 29 finished surface ready to receive finish paint, including back surfaces of all frames. 30
C. EXECUTION 32
INSPECTION 34
Examine substrate and conditions under which metal frames are to be installed. Do not proceed with work until 36 unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 37
INSTALLATION 39
Comply with provisions of SDI-105 "Recommended Erection Instructions for Steel Frames," unless otherwise 41 indicated. Place frames prior to construction of enclosing walls and ceilings. After wall construction is completed, 42 remove temporary braces, and spreaders, leaving surfaces smooth and undamaged. 43 At new sills and thresholds installed on existing floor materials, level existing materials with grout as required to 45 make proper substrate for installation of new sill or threshold. 46 Install frames accurately in position, plumbed and aligned to Door and Hardware Institute standards, and braced 48 securely until permanent anchors are set. Anchor frames securely to floor and at jambs. Furnish necessary clips, 49 fastenings and anchorages, and conceal unless otherwise noted. Weld all field joints, grind smooth, and fill with 50 body putty to completely conceal seams and to form a smooth, unbroken finish surface. 51 Spot grout at all jambs of frames set into metal stud construction; this work is included under Section 09250. 52 Where frames are anchored with bolts, bolts shall be countersunk, and surfaces shall be made smooth with putty. 54 At the Contractor’s option, at conditions where new frames are to be installed in existing concrete or masonry 55 walls, frame jambs and heads may be installed using the following method: 56
- Grout new frame full prior to installation in wall 57
- Install frame in opening, anchoring with countersunk anchors through frame face, and body putty over 58 anchors 59
112-006 08100-4
- Tuck point (with grout) the frame perimeter between frame face and wall construction, holding grout back 1 1” from frame faces for caulk (caulk under Section 07900) 2
Install fire-rated frames in accordance with NFPA Standard No. 80. 4
ADJUST AND CLEAN 6
Immediately after erection, sand smooth any rusted or damaged areas of prime coat and apply touch-up of 8 compatible air-drying primer, paying particular attention to bottom of frames at the floor line. 9 Check and readjust operating finish hardware items, leaving metal doors and frames undamaged and in complete 11 and proper operating condition. 12
