| 31 | Question | |||
| 09 97 13.00 40 | Specified steel coating primer is an inorganic zinc and is designed to be applied to abrasive blasted surface. Given the condition of the existing steel, the surface prep could be downgraded to an SP1, followed by an SP2 handtool cleaning and SP3 powertool clean of rusted surfaces. This would allow for a different coating system (surface tolerate epoxy): 1. Spot Prime with Carbomastic 94 epoxy or equal at 4-6 mils DFT 2. Full prime with the Carbomastic 94 epoxy or equal at 2-4 mils DFT 3. Finish coat with the carbothane 134HG or equal at 2-4 mils DFT . This would reduce the cost of the painting shop substantially. Would this be an acceptable to the Government? | |||
| Answer | ||||
| The Government will accept a surface tolerant polyamide epoxy for prime coat in lieu of the specified inorganic zinc primer. Surface prep can be downgraded from the specified SSPC-SP-10 (Near white metal blast cleaning) to SSPC-SP-1 (Solvent Cleaning), SSPC-SP-2 (Hand Tool Cleaning), and SSPC-SP-3 (Powertool Cleaning). Aliphatic polyurethane is specified for the top/finish coat, which this recommended system appears to include. | ||||
| 32 | Question | |||
| 09 67 23.16 / 1.3.5.5 | Qualification of Coating Contractors , All contractors that perform surface preperation or coating application must be certified to SSPC QP 8 and should also be SSPC QS 1 certified. Is this coating ceritification required for spec.(09 90 00 Paint and Coatings) and (09 97 13.00 40 Steel Coating) or just 09 67 23.16? | |||
| Answer | ||||
| There is no intent to make the coating requirements of the resinous flooring specification (09 67 23.16) apply to the paint (09 90 00) or steel coating (09 97 13.00 40) sections. |
