About this file
This is a Performance Work Statement (Section 024200) for site demolition, removal, and recycling work as part of the Excess Non-Accelerator Facilities Demolition Phase 1 project at Fermilab, dated October 2024.
The work scope encompasses complete demolition and removal of existing buildings, structures, hardstands, paved areas, vaults, sheds, fences, steps, foundations, and retaining walls to a depth of eighteen inches below grade. The subcontractor must identify and document all existing underground utilities (both active and abandoned) in coordination with Fermilab's GIS personnel, verify disconnection and proper sealing of utility connections, and is prohibited from using blasting methods. Prior to demolition, Fermilab will perform testing and abatement for contaminants such as lead-based paint and asbestos, though the subcontractor must notify the Construction Coordinator of any suspect materials encountered during work. The subcontractor must coordinate with Fermilab for removal of specific items including light fixture ballasts and lamps, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, fire alarm panels, telephone handsets, and lockset cylinders. A certified EPA-registered refrigerant recovery service is required, with all recovered refrigerant turned over to Fermilab. The subcontractor must recycle or salvage at least fifty percent of non-hazardous construction and demolition materials and provide documentation of recycling quantities. Additional requirements include maintaining erosion control measures throughout the project, protecting existing people and property with temporary bracing and barricades, filling sites to original grade with suitable material, maintaining existing drainage patterns, preventing debris from leaving the construction site with daily roadway cleaning, and seeding disturbed areas with IDOT Class 2 Roadside grass mixture at 200 lbs/acre upon completion.
