About this file

This document is an informational brochure from Washington County Solid Waste & Recycling (SWR) about food donation programs for businesses in Oregon. The brochure details a comprehensive initiative to help businesses donate surplus unserved food, highlighting the process of food donation and its community benefits. The materials explain how businesses can participate by contacting a Washington County Green Business Advisor, preparing food for donation, and having food pantries collect the surplus items.

The brochure provides key statistics about food waste, noting that 83 million tons of food are wasted annually in the U.S., while one in five people in Oregon are food insecure. The program offers businesses multiple incentives for participation, including supporting the local community, protecting the environment, potentially saving on garbage collection costs, and qualifying for tax deductions. Businesses are also assured legal protection under federal and state Good Samaritan laws when donating safely handled food. Contact information is provided for interested businesses, including a phone number (503-846-3605), email (recycle@co.washington.or.us), and website (WashingtonCountyRecycles.com/GreenBusiness) for the Washington County Green Business Advisors.
