About this file
This is an initial assessment report documenting gopher tortoise burrows identified at Florida Inland Navigation District's (FIND) Dredge Material Management Area (DMMA) BV-52 in Brevard County, conducted by Beb Sebastian in February and March 2022. The assessment identified thirty potential gopher tortoise burrows across the property, with the highest density located in the northwest corner. Each burrow was recorded, marked with pink flagging tape, photographed, and assigned GPS coordinates for documentation purposes. The report includes a detailed map showing burrow locations and a comprehensive table listing the latitude and longitude coordinates for all thirty identified sites (GT1 through GT30), serving as baseline environmental data for the related Eau Gallie Muck Removal Project Area A1.
This assessment document is directly relevant to the Eau Gallie dredging project, which will utilize DMMA BV-52 as the designated disposal site for approximately 189,972 cubic yards of dredged organic sediments, with potential for an additional 108,782 cubic yards through alternate bid items. The gopher tortoise survey results are essential for environmental compliance and project planning, as the contractor must develop and obtain approval for restoration plans that comply with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations. The identification and documentation of these burrow locations enable the contractor and permitting agencies to implement appropriate protective measures and mitigation strategies during dredge material placement and site restoration operations on the DMMA property.

Gopher Tortoise Initial Assessment of Florida Inland Navigation District’s (FIND)
Dredge Material Management Area (DMMA) BV-52
Brevard County (Beb Sebastian) conducted an initial assessment of gopher tortoise burrows at
FIND’s DMMA BV-52 in February/March, 2022 (2/10, 2/16, and 3/2). Thirty potential gopher tortoise burrows were recorded and marked with pink flagging tape. The highest density of active gopher tortoise burrows appeared to be in the northwest corner of the property. Photos for some of the burrows were obtained (see below).
