About this file
This document is a Gopher Tortoise Initial Assessment report prepared for the Florida Inland Navigation District's (FIND) Dredge Material Management Area (DMMA) BV-52 in Brevard County, Florida. Conducted in February and March 2022, the assessment surveyed the site for potential gopher tortoise burrows, identifying and recording 30 such burrows across the property. The highest density of active burrows was observed in the northwest corner of the site. The document includes a detailed map marking the locations of these burrows, GPS coordinates for each identified site, and photographic documentation of selected burrow locations.
The assessment appears to be a preliminary environmental survey in preparation for the Eau Gallie Muck Removal Project Area A1, which involves hydraulic dredging of approximately 189,972 cubic yards of organic sediments. The gopher tortoise survey is critical for environmental compliance and understanding potential ecological impacts before site development. The documentation provides precise geographical data, including latitude and longitude for each burrow, and timestamps for the survey dates, which will be valuable for environmental planning and potential mitigation strategies related to the gopher tortoise habitat.

Gopher Tortoise Initial Assessment of Florida Inland Navigation District’s (FIND)
Dredge Material Management Area (DMMA) BV-52
Brevard County (Beb Sebastian) conducted an initial assessment of gopher tortoise burrows at
FIND’s DMMA BV-52 in February/March, 2022 (2/10, 2/16, and 3/2). Thirty potential gopher tortoise burrows were recorded and marked with pink flagging tape. The highest density of active gopher tortoise burrows appeared to be in the northwest corner of the property. Photos for some of the burrows were obtained (see below).
