2.0 Background
Sherando Lake Recreation Area lies within the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and is one of the most popular recreation areas in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the mid-1930’s, the recreation area, and its two lakes, is often referred to as the Crown Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area’s multiple family campground options provide an ideal destination for visitors to enjoy hiking, picnicking, fishing the lakes and streams, swimming, and relaxing on the sandy beach. In just 10 years, Sherando will reach the significant milestone of 100 years of operations. Rehabilitation work is intended to address deferred maintenance and support public access to this rec area for years to come.
