About this file

The document is the District of Columbia Courts (DCC) Furniture and Furnishings Standards, Version 1.0, dated May 2025. It provides comprehensive guidelines for furniture selection, configuration, and specifications across different organizational levels and office types within the DCC. The standards cover furniture requirements for various positions from Associate Judges to non-supervisory staff, detailing specific furniture layouts, dimensions, electrical requirements, and recommended manufacturers.

The document outlines precise furniture configurations for different office typicals, including chambers, workstations, and administrative spaces. Each office type is assigned specific furniture pieces such as desks, chairs, storage units, and overhead hutches, with detailed specifications for veneer finishes, panel fabrics, electrical outlets, and task lighting. The standards specify furniture from primary manufacturers like MillerKnoll and Haworth, and include technical drawings, electrical wiring diagrams, and cluster layouts to ensure consistent, standardized furniture implementation across DCC facilities. The document also provides guidance on electrical configurations, outlet types, and accessibility requirements.

1. INTRODUCTION & OVERVIEW

▪ The purpose of this document is to provide comprehensive guidance for the development of the programmatic design and specification of furniture within the District of Columbia Courts

(DCC) workspaces. This Furniture and Furnishings Standards shall provide the furniture designers and the architect and engineering team with guidance and tools that aid in the design of a cohesive standardized workplaces that conform to and meet the established standards implemented within all DCC occupied space.

▪ The goal of this standard is to provide a baseline of knowledge for all different types of design disciplines. It is incumbent on the furniture design team to ensure when implementing this standard that all DCC facilities adhere to applicable health, safety, and other requirements applicable to the jurisdiction in which they operate.

▪ DCC recognizes that all new and refurbished offices, due to site conditions, may require the

‘typical’ to be adapted to meet the required standards, and the project teams are encouraged to evaluate each project individually, based on the property and the project requirements as appropriate. Modi f icat ion or ‘best f i t ’ recommendations from the furniture design team will be taken under advisement by the DCC decision making authority: Capital Projects and

Facilities Management Division (CPFMD).

▪ All furniture must meet the sizes specified and these dimensions shall be considered the maximum allowed.

▪ For items which will may become outdated such as fabrics, finishes, and or information technology components, content will be marked with the last date of update. It is the furniture design teams’ responsibility to verify availability at the time of programming development.

▪ Project Design Requirements: ABAAS Compliance: The DC Courts require that all furniture and installations meet the requirements of the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Guidelines.

Furniture installed in all DCC occupied spaces shall comply with all clearances recommended under ABAAS. All furniture must meet the clearances shown for electrical placement. Any furniture solution provided that cannot meet this requirement will not be considered.

▪ Product Standards: The private offices and workstations are designed to a technical standard that is notionally based on MillerKnoll Reff and Dividends product lines. The technical requirements, dimensions, features, and specific finishes shown are to be considered the standard ‘basis of design’ for product performance and layout requirements for the typicals or items shown herein. Unless and item is noted otherwise, alternative products and applications may be considered as long as the proposed meets or exceeds the specification requirements stated in the ‘basis of design’ selection.
