About this file

This document appears to be a set of detailed guidelines for administering a color vision test for job candidates. The recommendations cover seven key aspects of test administration, including pre-test preparation, testing environment, equipment specifications, and retesting procedures. Critical requirements include digitally administering the test to remove human bias, ensuring a controlled testing environment (dim lighting, no window glare), prohibiting specific colored contact lenses or glasses, using modern computer monitors without digital filters, and allowing immediate retesting if a candidate fails the initial exam. The guidelines emphasize precise testing conditions to accurately assess a candidate's color vision, with specific protocols to prevent false negatives or positives, such as allowing candidates to practice with free trial software and using high-precision tests that can accurately identify Color Vision Deficiency (CVD).

Text version

The Contractor shall provide the following recommendations to applicants in advance of taking the exam:

1. Before the official test is administered, applicants are recommended to avoid the use of alcohol or overly bright environments (e.g., day at the beach, snow skiing) in the days before they take the test. These and other activities (what other activities) may temporarily affect their color vision for several days and negatively impact scoring.

2. This test should be digitally administered to remove any human administrator bias.

The room’s layout and lighting should minimize any glare on the screen (i.e., dim lighting, screens do not face windows); though the contractor should always default to the protocols of the specific color vision test they choose to utilize.

3. When the job candidate arrives to take the 3–5-minute test, a test administrator should ensure they do not have magenta, red, or pink colored contact lenses in their eyes. These would be noticeable by just looking at their eyes and should not require removing their contacts. Similarly, normal corrective lenses should be fine, but test takers should be warned that there is a possibility that light filters (e.g., blue light filters) in corrective lenses may negatively affect test performance. Magenta, red, or pink colored lenses in glasses must also be prohibited.

4. Similarly, if a computer monitor is used in color vision testing, it should adhere to modern color standards (i.e., sRGB), should be less than 5 years old, and should not have any digital filters (i.e., blue light filter, night shift, dark mode, etc.) activated.

There should be no additional physical screen modifications such as privacy screens added to the monitor. The screen luminance (brightness) may be automatically adjusted by the software to the prescribed brightness level. Test takers should not be permitted to adjust the screen’s colors, contrast, or brightness levels during the test. Some color vision tests (i.e., WCCVT) automatically stop the test if screen brightness is manipulated.

5. If the job candidate fails this initial official test, they should be allowed to immediately re-test, if they desire to retest. They may have initially failed due to 1) a misunderstanding of the instructions, 2) being nervous, 3) being unfamiliar with the test speed and test input devices (i.e., mouse, digital keypad, etc.) of the test, or any other number of other reasons.

6. High precision color vision tests will accurately retest people who have a Color Vision Deficiency (CVD). This removes the concern of repeated back-to-back testing accidentally passing someone who has a CVD. If a candidate ever scores as having normal vision, they should be considered as having normal vision at that time and continue in the pre-employment process.

7. With or without the implementation of a validated online practice test, if the job candidate downloads a free trial of the color vision test software in order to practice repeatedly, this should not be considered cheating in any way.
