Clinical content has a lifecycle that includes stages starting with recognition of a clinical need and ending with artifact retirement. Clinical needs can be identified via top-down and bottom-up techniques. Bottom-up clinical needs come from front line providers who recognize an opportunity for improving quality, safety or efficiency based on their day to day practice of medicine. Top down needs are identified by managers and executives who see opportunities for improvement from a systems level based on performance gaps or new organizational initiatives. Both approaches are critical.
