About this file
This document is an exhibit (Exhibit P) from a contract specification document (R6-4-00-04) that provides technical guidance on scalping and scalping with microsites for tree planting operations.
The exhibit establishes specific requirements for scalp preparation in tree planting work, using a 30 x 30 inch scalp as an example. All scalps must conform to sizes specified on project data sheets. Scalps that are irregular—with portions failing to meet the correct diameter specifications or exceeding the indicated diameter—will be classified as above-ground infractions or evidence of improper tree planting. For scalping with microsites, a microsite object (such as a tree or stump) must be positioned to the southwest of the planted seedling at approximately 24 inches away. The document clarifies that the microsite-creating object itself is not counted as part of the microsite area. The exhibit includes side views, top views, and cross-sectional diagrams to illustrate proper scalping techniques and microsite placement.

U For all scalps the size of the scalp shall be as specified on the data sheets. Scalps that are irregular, with some portions not having the correct diameter, yet with some portions exceeding the indicated diameter, will be counted as an above ground infraction, or a tree not properly planted.
For scalping with a microsite, the object being used as a microsite should lay to the southwest of the planted seedling, approximately 24" away. The microsite creating object, such as a tree or stump, will not count as part of the micro site.
