1.3 DELIVERY AND STORAGE
Deliver materials to the site in an undamaged condition. Store, protect, handle, and install prefabricated structural elements in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and as specified. Store materials off the ground to provide proper ventilation, with drainage to avoid standing water, and protection against ground moisture and dampness. Store materials with a moisture barrier at both the ground level and as a cover forming a well ventilated enclosure. Adhere to requirements for stacking, lifting, bracing, cutting, notching, and special fastening requirements. Do not use materials that have visible moisture or biological growth.
Remove defective and damaged materials and provide new materials.
Store separated reusable wood waste convenient to cutting station and area of work.
1.4 GRADING AND MARKING
1.4.1 Lumber
Mark each piece of framing and board lumber or each bundle of small pieces of lumber with the grade mark of a recognized association or independent inspection agency. Such association or agency must be certified by the Board of Review, American Lumber Standards
Committee, to grade the species used. Surfaces that are to be exposed
SECTION 06 10 00 Page 4 to view must not bear grademarks, stamps, or any type of identifying mark. Hammer marking will be permitted on timbers when all surfaces will be exposed to view
1.4.2 Preservative-Treated Lumber and Plywood
Chemically/Pressure–Treated lumber and Plywood shall not be used.
1.5 SIZES AND SURFACING
ALSC PS 20 for dressed sizes of yard and structural lumber. Lumber must be surfaced four sides. Size references, unless otherwise specified, are nominal sizes, and actual sizes must be within manufacturing tolerances allowed by the standard under which the product is produced. Other measurements are IP or SI standard.
1.6 MOISTURE CONTENT
Air-dry or kiln-dry lumber. Kiln-dry treated lumber after treatment.
Maximum moisture content of wood products must be as follows at the time of delivery to the job site:
a. Framing lumber and board, 19 percent maximum
1.7 PROTECTIVE TREATMENT
Exterior rated Paint. All exposed surfaces of planks shall receive two
(2) coats of paint.
1.8 QUALITY ASSURANCE
1.8.1 Drawing Requirements
For fabricated structural members, indicate materials, details of construction, and methods of fastening details. Include reference to design criteria used and manufacturers design calculations. Submit drawings for all proposed modifications of structural members. Do not proceed with modifications until the submittal has been approved.
1.9 CERTIFICATIONS
1.9.1 Certified Wood Grades
Provide certificates of grade from the grading agency on graded but unmarked lumber or plywood attesting that materials meet the grade requirements specified herein.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
2.1.1 Virgin Lumber
Lumber fabricated from old growth timber is not permitted. Avoid companies who buy, sell, or use old growth timber in their operations, when possible.
SECTION 06 10 00 Page 5
2.1.2 Salvaged Lumber
Salvaged lumber is not permitted.
2.1.3 Recovered Lumber
Recovered lumber is not permitted.
2.2 LUMBER
2.2.1 Structural Lumber
ALL lumber must be submitted and approved prior to procurement and installation.
50mmx200mm shall meet ALL MINIMUM values:
Fb (Bending): 6032 kPA (875psi)
F+ (Tension parallel to grain): 3100 kPa (450psi)
Fv (Shear parallel to grain): 930 kPa (135psi)
Fc+ (Compression perpendicular to grain): 2930 kPa (425psi)
Fc (Compression parallel to grain): 7925 kPa (1150psi)
E (Modulus of Elasticity): 9,652 MPa (1,400,000psi)
Em (Modulus of Elasticity): 3,516 MPa (510,000psi)
2.3 PROTECTIVE TREATMENT
Paint all exposed wood faces exposed to weather and environmental conditions. Submit color for COR approval. Acceptable colors are tan, khaki, and light brown. Latex or oil-based paint.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
Do not install building construction materials that show visual evidence of biological growth.
Conform to AWC WFCM and install in accordance with the National
Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Advanced Framing Techniques:
Optimum Value Engineering, unless otherwise indicated or specified.
Select lumber sizes to minimize waste. Fit framing lumber and other rough carpentry, set accurately to the required lines and levels, and secure in place in a rigid manner. Spiking and nailing not indicated or specified otherwise must be in accordance with the Nailing Schedule contained in ICC IBC; perform bolting in an approved manner. Spikes, nails, and bolts must be drawn up tight.
3.1.1 Wall Framing
3.1.1.1 Plates
Use plates, 50mmx200mm. Spike single plates together in accordance with
SECTION 06 10 00 Page 6
ANSI/ASAE EP559.1 AUG2010 (R2019). A 12mm edge distance to any free edge shall be maintained, free from nails, fasteners, spikes to avoid fiber damage. Nail top members into lower TWO preceding members with
50d Common Nail(50-penny nails), at 100mm on center. Stagger nail patterns by 30mm such that nails do not collide, cause blowout, or rebound nails, per IBC 2304.9.3 “Mechanically Laminated Decking”. First course plates may need to be notched, bird-mouthed, grooved, to accommodate a snug fit around bolt heads, nuts, connections, etc. It is imperative that all wood be snug-fit, reducing any air voids, free space, or infiltration.
