About this file
This document is an HVAC System Study for Technical Building 400 at Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado. The study identifies several issues with the overhead and technical air handling units (AHUs) serving Modules 3, 4, and 5 of the building. Recommendations include re-balancing air and water flows, replacing cooling coils and control devices, repairing torn ductwork, and replacing older variable air volume (VAV) boxes. It also recommends converting the data center spaces to a dedicated room configuration to better separate them from the office areas.
The related federal contract opportunity is for the purchase, delivery, and installation of sixteen seismic-compliant IT cabinet racks in two hot aisle containment (HAC) configurations within Technical Building 400. Each HAC will have two rows of four cabinets. The work includes installing brush grommets, bus bars, cable management, blanking panels, remote power distribution units, biometric door locks, LED lighting, and thermal curtains. Pre- and post-installation airflow and temperature measurements are required. Responses to the solicitation are due by September 17, 2024. The contracting agency is the Department of the Air Force Space Command.

If Tech cool redundancy is required for this MOD, replace the existing FSUs serving MODs 2A and 2B with units adequately sized to handle the Tech cooling loads for these spaces.
3. MOD 3
Overhead AHU-TB-105 meets the calculated airflows on the airside, however, it is operating slightly above its original design airflow. The unit is operating at a low chilled water dT and high flow, resulting in a low cooling capacity.
Tech AHU-TB-101 currently meets the calculated airflows and capacity requirements by itself. AHU- TB-103 shares the load with 101 but capacity could not be determined since the chilled water temperature gauges were broken. Tech AHU-TB-102 is the redundant unit and have broken temperature gauges. Tech AHU-TB-101 and 103 have higher than normal differential pressures across the cooling coils.
Tech AHU-TB-103’s flex duct connector is torn on the supply side and is producing twice the amount of CFM as designed.
RAF-TB-102 is not operational and can be causing over pressurization issues within the MOD.
Recommendation: Re-balance the overhead unit’s air and water side. Replace the cooling coil, associated piping, and control devices with new, as necessary. Replace or repair the hot deck and cold deck dampers.
The VMB boxes that serve the MOD’s overhead system are original to the building (40+ years old) and may not have functioning cold deck/hot deck dampers. These units are recommended to be replaced with adequately sized units based on the calculated loads.
Repair the torn flex duct connector on AHU-TB-103, replace broken temperature gauges on AHU-TB- 102 and 103, re-balance the chilled water coil flows on the Tech AHUs; replace the cooling coil, associated piping, and control devices with new, as necessary.
Consider dedicating a Data Center room in MOD 3 to separate the office space from the Tech space and conform with UFC 3-600-01 and NFPA 75.
Repair RAF-TB-102.
Replace the existing fixed volume floor registers in the Data Center spaces with VAV floor registers to allow more efficient use of Tech air.

4. MOD 4
Overhead AHU-TB-104 does not meet the calculated airflows on the airside and is operating slightly below its original design airflow. The unit’s temperature gauges are broken so a cooling capacity could not be determined.
Tech AHU-TB-101 currently meets the calculated airflows and capacity requirements. Tech AHU-TB- 101 and 103 have higher than normal differential pressures across the cooling coils.
Tech AHU-TB-103’s flex duct connector is torn on the supply side and is producing twice the amount of CFM as designed.
The secondary and redundant Tech AHUs have temperature gauges that are not functioning.
Recommendation: Re-balance the overhead unit’s air and water side. Replace the cooling coil, associated piping, and control devices with new, as necessary. Replace or repair the hot deck and cold deck dampers.

Replace the existing fixed volume floor registers in the Data Center spaces with VAV floor registers to allow more efficient use of Tech air.
5. MOD 5
Overhead AHU-TB-119 meets the calculated airflows on the airside and is operating above its original design airflow. The unit is operating at a very high chilled water dT and low flow, resulting in a low cooling capacity.
The Tech AHUs currently meet the calculated airflows and capacity requirements. Tech AHU-TB-117 has a higher than normal differential pressures across the cooling coils.
Tech AHU-TB-118 has no temperature or pressure gauges installed on its chilled water coil piping.
