About this file
This lesson plan outlines training for use of an Application Program Set (APS) to test Line Replaceable Units for the LAV-ATGM weapon system. Key details include:
-
The APS allows for verification testing of 17 LAV-ATGM LRUs using the VIPER/T Automatic Test Equipment. It consists of interface devices, fixture assemblies, load boxes, cables, shorting plugs and executable software across five transit cases.
-
The lesson plan provides instructions for operating the APS, including initializing test programs in PAWS Studio, performing setup instructions, executing test modules, and exiting. Troubleshooting steps are also outlined. Learning objectives cover APS characteristics, capabilities, components and operation.
-
Hands-on training will utilize available test program hardware and LRUs. Safety procedures are briefed. Evaluation will be based on hands-on performance with the provided equipment.

6. SAFETY/CEASE TRAINING (CT) BRIEF. Training will cease in the event of an emergency. Every trainee is responsible for safety and can call a “Cease Training” any time you see an unsafe act occurring. Adhere to all warnings and cautions to prevent injury to personnel and damage to equipment.
TRANSITION: Are there any questions about the purpose of this lesson or how the lesson will be taught? Now let’s talk about the APS characteristics.
1. CHARACTERISTICS.
Show the students the system setup for training. Highlight the weight of the system and that it is a 2-man lift.
WARNING
The both Transit Cases individually weigh approximately 109 to
138lbs. fully loaded and the use of proper Material Handling
Equipment (MHE) is recommended to safely place the case on the floor, table, or other structure. Failure to follow safety guidelines for lifting may result in damage to equipment, serious injury, or death.

4. OPERATION.
Break the class up into teams in accordance with the number of systems on hand. Ensure each team has enough time to practice each step before moving on.
Always ensure the system chassis is properly grounded prior to operation. Failure to properly ground the equipment can lead to
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). Failure to follow this warning may result in serious injury or death to personnel.
Always operate the ATE and LRU’s in a well ventilated area away from explosive gasses and vapors. Failure to follow this warning may result in injury or death to personnel.
Test Program Software will be loaded for each TPH and UUT tested via VIPER/T (V4).
a. INITIALIZE TPS IN PAWS STUDIO RTS.
(1) Locate the appropriate APS Executable Disc and ensure that it is the currently approved/authorized version.
Executable Disc
(2) Insert executable disc in VIPER/T (V4) Common
Instrument Controller (CIC) dock optical disc drive.
NOTE
If the VIPER/T (V4) is already equipped with the Executable software on the System then the operator can bypass this step and the step below (steps 1 & 2).
(3) Once the Executable Disc is recognized by the CIC, the TPS list will be populated with an expandable file/folder tree from which a LRU or TPH specific TPS may be selected. Expand the list by clicking on the next to the APS nomenclature.
(4) Select the appropriate LRU/TPH specific TPS (.OBJ) file and click the ‘Run Test Program’ button to load the selected TPS in the PAWS Studio Run Time System (RTS).
Whether choosing to perform a self-test of the APS Test
Program Hardware (TPH) or a LRU, the process will be the same. For training purposes, the TPH (Self-Test) will be run prior to any other TPS.
(5) After PAWS RTS is finished loading, click the ‘Run’ button to initiate the TPS.
(6) TPS specific information is displayed such as, UUT Name, UUT Part Number, Interface Device (ID) Test cables, and additional equipment required to execute this TPS, before arriving at the TPS
Main Menu. Select True to continue to TPS Main Menu.
(7) The TPS is now at the Main Menu and ready to execute the associated LRU/TPH setup instruction(s) or test module(s).
b. PERFORM TPS SETUP INSTRUCTIONS.
(1) While at the TPS Main Menu, enter 96 in the dialog box and press enter or click the OK button.
To avoid electrical shock to personnel, make sure that all electrical power is turned OFF when cleaning, inspecting, and repairing electrical cables, contacts, and connectors.
UUT/LRU’s contain Electrostatic Sensitive Devices (ESD) and components. Follow ESD handling procedures accordingly.
PMCS NOTE
1. Visually inspect the Interface Device for any physical damage that may have occurred during shipping and handling.
2. Visually inspect all Interface Device connectors for missing, broken, and bent pins.
3. Visually inspect insulated cable assemblies for physical damage.
4. Visually inspect all cable assembly connectors and all shorting plugs for missing, broken, and bent pins.
5. Visually inspect all the Holding Fixture and Self-Test
Fixtures for completeness and serviceability.
6. Visually inspect all connectors for missing, broken, and bent pins.
(2) Follow all displayed operator instructions to completion. Once setup is complete the TPS will return to the
TPS Main Menu.
c. EXECUTE TPS TEST MODULE(S).
In some cases, it may not be necessary or desirable to run all test modules. In this situation, enter the numeric value representative of the individual test module desired to be executed and press enter or click the OK button to execute. For example, you may only want to test your (W1) cable used with a particular LRU Test Program, enter 2 and press OK.
(1) While at the TPS Main Menu, enter 95 in the dialog box and press enter or click the OK button to execute all test modules comprising the selected TPS.
(2) Follow all displayed operator instructions to completion.
d. EXIT TPS AND PAWS RTS.
TROUBLESHOOTING NOTE
In the event of a TPS failure:
1. Verify all TPS set-up instructions have been followed correctly.
2. Verify that the APS Self-Test has been performed.
3. Verify that the ATE Self-Test has been performed.
In the event of a suspected faulty TPH component:
1. Re-visit PMCS tasks as identified in this lesson plan during TPS setup instructions.
2. Run TPH (Self-Test) TPS to verify condition of the component.
(1) While at the TPS Main Menu, enter 98 in the dialog box and press enter or click the OK button to exit testing.
(2) After TPS exits from the PAWS RTS, select Exit from the File Menu drop-down box.
TRANSITION: Are there any questions about how operate the APS?
SUMMARY
During this lesson, you were given an introduction to the characteristics, capabilities, and components of the APS. You also learned how to setup, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot the APS. With the knowledge and skills you have gained from this period of instruction, you will be able to employ the APS in a real-world environment.
