About this file
This document is a solicitation overview for non-historic building demolition services at Gateway National Recreation Area across multiple locations. The project encompasses the demolition of eleven buildings distributed across four sites within the Jamaica Bay Unit and Staten Island Unit of the recreation area. In the Jamaica Bay Unit at Floyd Bennett Field, three buildings require demolition: Building #126 (1,250 SF CMU Block storage building with no asbestos), Building #273 (946 SF CMU Block radar building with brick veneer and asbestos-containing materials), and Building #274 (176 SF CMU Block generator building with brick veneer and asbestos-containing materials). In the Staten Island Unit, demolition work includes three buildings at Fort Wadsworth—Building #406 (1,195 SF two-story gatehouse with aluminum siding and asbestos in roof shingles, tar paper, and roof mastic), Building #435 (2,356 SF storage building with aluminum siding and asbestos in hot tar roof, floor tile, and mastic), and Building #T354 (1,800 SF brick masonry USPP Swat Office with no documented asbestos); one building at Great Kills Park—Ranger Trailer (320 SF corrugated metal trailer with no asbestos); and four buildings at Miller Field—Building #3 (1,250 SF maintenance office with asbestos in roofing materials and tar paper), Building #4 (1,125 SF Swamp White Oak Center with presumed asbestos in tar paper), Building #5 (1,125 SF four-car garage with no asbestos), and Building #7 (180 SF brick pump house with no asbestos).
All buildings have been evaluated according to the Prizim, Inc. asbestos assessment report dated May 2009. Seven of the eleven buildings contain confirmed or presumed asbestos-containing materials requiring proper abatement procedures prior to or during demolition. The document provides detailed photographs and specifications for each building, including square footage, construction materials, foundation types, and specific asbestos locations where applicable. Contractors will need to coordinate work across geographically dispersed locations within a federal recreation area and comply with asbestos removal and hazardous materials handling requirements where applicable.
