The building was partially renovated in 1999, 2005 and 2012. The building contains 20 animal rooms, "clean" and "dirty" support areas containing special equipment used for animal care, men and women's change units, as well as office, storage areas and mechanical rooms that contain the supply fans and HEPA filter housings (major mechanical room in building 5B-120, 5B-180 and in the Building 5A penthouse).

CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

At the present time 15 animal holding rooms are being utilized requiring a constant environmental condition of 77°+ 3°F temperature, 40-60% relative humidity, and a positive static pressure differential to ensure the cleanliness of the areas. Other critical conditions that require routine maintenance and monitoring are, air flow direction and HEPA filter condition.

EXISTING SYSTEMS IN FACILITY

HVAC SYSTEM

The HVAC systems are 100% outside air systems providing HEPA filtered (99.97% above 0.3 micron particle size) air to the space with individual room control for temperature and humidity. Chilled water is furnished by the campus centralized district cooling system. The temperature and humidity in the animal holding areas are controlled utilizing hot water reheat and variable air volume control. The humidity is controlled by dehumidification at the cooling coils with humidification from in-duct steam humidifiers. The static pressure is controlled by variable speed drives on supply systems.

DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS:

The building has ducted air handlers with air to air heat exchangers that are roof mounted or located in Bldg 5B mechanical room 180 providing 100 percent outside air to zone control boxes. Steam, heating hot water and chilled water is supplied from site utilities. The exhaust fans that provide exhaust for animal rooms and restrooms are incorporated into the air handlers.

Chilled water is supplied from site AW, air conditioning, water system. Heating hot water is provided from steam converters in the 5B building. Space humidity is provided by steam humidifiers.

TERMINAL & PACKAGE UNITS:

The building has zone control boxes mounted in the ceilings and in the penthouse.

CONTROLS & INSTRUMENTATION:

Electric thermostats and humidity sensors are interfaced to a Siemens Apogee DDC system for control.

PLUMBING:

In the processing area, plumbing has been replaced (2004), excluding in slab sewer lines to all processing equipment.

Building 5A is also served by the industrial and sanitary sewer systems, the low pressure steam system, the low pressure steam condensate system, and the central plant compressed air system, hot and cold water system.

PIPING:

Domestic water is supplied to the building by the site distribution system, with distribution by copper piping. Domestic hot water for the building is provided from hot water system in the penthouse installed in 2012.

Storm water is removed from the rooftops by gutters with leaders to ground drainage. The sanitary system is gravity piping to the site system. The process equipment waste water goes to a sump pump and is pump to the gravity fed system.

FIXTURES:

There are men's and women's multi-fixture restrooms - shower rooms with vitreous china lavatories, urinals and water closet fixtures. The janitorial closet is equipped with a utility sink. Individual DX cooled drinking fountains are provided.
