About this file
The provided file is a multilingual translation guide for the World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program, offering standardized Spanish, Polish, and Chinese translations for key medical, administrative, and program-specific terminology. The comprehensive document provides detailed linguistic recommendations for terms related to health conditions, program services, legal references, and administrative processes, with each language section including preferred translations, justifications, and acceptable alternative translations.
The translation guide covers a wide range of terms critical to the WTC Health Program, including medical conditions (e.g., acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder), program-specific terminology (e.g., Responder, Survivor), administrative language (e.g., certification, authorization), and agency names. Spanish
| This list has been consolidated and reviewed by the WTC Health Program and Clinical Centers of Excellence in the NY metropolitan area | |||
| Term | Preferred translation and acronym (where applicable) | Justification | Acceptable alternate translation(s) |
| Acute stress disorder | trastorno por estrés agudo (TEA) | most commonly used in the mental health field. This is the Spanish translation published in the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders -V (DSM-V) |
"acute" should be included for consistency
| Acute traumatic injuries | Lesiones traumáticas agudas | LTA is not a very common acronym in Spanish, but if given after mentioning the term, members will understand and it would be no need to use the English acronym.The only difference is singular and plural, and the context will determine which one is accurate. | ||
| Adjustment disorder | trastornos de adaptación | This is a widely used term, including in the Spanish version of the DSM-V and in many other scholar and reliable sources. | trastorno adaptativo | |
| Administrator of the WTC Health Program | El administrador del Programa de Atención Médica del World Trade Center | |||
| Affiliated | Afiliado | |||
| Affiliated provider | proveedor afiliado | |||
| Airway and digestive disorders | Trastornos aerodigestivos | Consistent with Member handbook and MMSM materials | ||
| Annual Monitoring Exam | Examen Anual de Monitoreo | The term suggested is the most commonly used by our members and bilingual staff, such as: patient coordinators, front desk staff, interpreters, providers, etc. Monitoreo tends to be the norm of Spanish spoken in the U.S. | ||
| The main justification is that exposing members to a term they're not familiar with or that staff is not using when scheduling this visit; it can create the notion of referring to a different type of visit. | Examen de monitoreo anual (this is often used by our members and most frontline staff) | |||
| Anxiety disorders | trastornos de ansiedad | Refer to "Generalized Anxiety Disorder" | trastorno de ansiedad generalizada (TAG) is also an often found option that is equivalent to the use in plural, it has been widely used over the years in the mental health field, including in the DSM-V in Spanish and it has an acronym (TAG). | |
| Appeal | Apelación | |||
| Appeal coordinator | Coordinador de apelaciones | |||
| Authorization | Coordinador de apelaciones | |||
| Benefits counseling | Consejería sobre beneficios - | in order to maintain consistency with printed materials over the years. Advice could imply "this is what you should do because it's the best option" instead of "these are your options and consider them to see what is best depending on your situation". | Both asesoramiento and consejería are correct, patients get "consejería" as part of their monitoring visit both for benefits and mental health services. | |
| Cancer | Tipos de cáncer or cánceres depending on the context | Our members do not tend to use the plural form: "cánceres" | ||
| Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services | Centros de Servicios de Medicare y Medicaid | Used in Member Handbook and across other government agencies | ||
| Certification | Certificación | |||
| Certified | certificada or certificado | Consistent with Member handbook | It will depend on the context and the following are variations determined by the noun or verb in Spanish: |
certificada;
certificado;
certificadas; and certificados. Examples: trastorno certificado (certified disorder), or afección certificada (certified condition)
| Certified-eligible survivor | Sobreviviente de eligibilidad certificada | This is the widespread translation as per not only the MH but the CDC and the VCF. | Superviviente (survivor) is considered a more educated term in some countries and preferred by dictionaries, but in U.S. Spanish and, therefore among our members, sobreviviente is most commonly used. |
| Clinical Center of Excellence | Centro Cínico de Excelencia (CCE) |
Centros Clínicos de Excelencia Depending on the context, the translator will need to choose between singular or plural. The MH translation is good and works well; still, patients and frontline staff do not use centros médicos as they have been mostly exposed to what we are recommending.
Also, the acronym CCE remains the same both in Spanish as in English.
Former translators in the Program have used CCE, both the singluar and plural variations depending on the context.
| Condition | enfermedad or afección | Condición is an angliscism depending on the context, but when condition is referring to a disease is considered a misstranslation. | enfermedades |
| Coordination of benefits | Coordinación de beneficios | ||
| Covered Conditions | afecciones cubiertas | See previous comments related to condition (line 22) | enfermedades cubiertas |
| Depression | depresión | ||
| Designated representative | Representante designado | ||
| Durable medical equipment | Equipo médico duradero | ||
| Dysthymic disorder | trastorno distímico | Consistent with Spanish version of the DSM-5 and other reliable sources. | persistent depressive disorder = trastorno depresivo persistente |
dysthymia = distimia
| EKG | electrocardiograma (ECG) | This the correct acronym in Spanish | |
| Extended care services | Servicios detención prolongada | The manual translates care as both cuidado or atención. And it works in this context as they can be synonyms. Extendido and prolongado are also synomyns in this context. Both options, are correct | servicios de cuidado extendido |
| FDNY Responders and family members | Personal de respuesta del FDNY y sus familiares | ||
| Federally qualified health center | Centro médico aprobado por el Gobierno federal or Centro clínico aprobado por el Gobierno federal ("centro clínico" will work as mentioned for "CCE") | Centro clínico aprobado por el Gobierno federal | |
| First payer | Pagador primario | widely used in the U.S. spoken Spanish and Medicare preferred translation (also used by many of our Spanish-speaking members), the CDC, the VA, Aetna, state government official websites, among others. | |
| responsable principal de pago | |||
| Formulary | Lista de medicamentos | the transaltor made a good choice as he/she is translating what follows after "formulary" in the English original. Using an equivalent for "formulary" would have created ambiguity. We agree with the manual as long as it also includes the complete phrase (lista de medicamentos aprobados...) | Formulario de medicamentos can be often found in many websites, althought at times it says lista de medicamentos (formulario). It seems as it is not common enough as to use it by itself. We are also concerned with using formulario because it is most often used in Spanish as an equivalent of form (such as an application form to be filled, and so on). |
| Fraud | Fraude | There are other equivalents in Spanish, such as: estafa or engaño, but fraude leaves no room for missunderstandings | ||
| General Responder | Personal de respuesta general | Widely used by the CDC and often quoted in Spanish whith the same context. | ||
| Our recommendation is also used by the CDC and the VCF in their pages in Spanish. | personal general de respuesta | |||
| Generalized anxiety disorder | trastorno de ansiedad generalizada (TAG) | We would use the same terminology used in "covered conditions" translated in-house because it is the preferred translation of notably NIH and the DSM-V, among other reliable sources | ||
| Ground Zero | Zona Cero | Zona Cero is what the MH has and what is universally know as an equivalent of Ground Zero; it is what our patients and frontline staff use. | ||
| Healthcare | Atención médica | Members and frontline staff, including interpreters, tend to use more often cuidado. Médico,atención, cuidado or servicios are sometimes used, as well as cuidado de salud, and it can be found on many online resources | cuidado médico | |
| Home health services | Servicios de salud en el hogar | |||
| Hospice care | Cuidados paliativos | |||
| Initial health evaluation | Evaluación inicial de salud | |||
| Inpatient | Paciente hospitalizado | inpatient is used differently in English depending on the context. The context will determine variations of the tem "inpatient" as it can have gender and be either singular and plural. | inpatient services = servicios hospitalarios | |
| Inpatient Care | Atención hospitalaria | |||
| James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 (Zadroga Act) | Ley de Salud y Compensación del 9/11 James Zadroga del 2010 (Ley Zadroga) | Consistent with other resources |
The VCF has more than one version in Spanish, but it is not as widely used as the MH and the sources mentioned.
| Last Payer | pagador de último recurso | if members were to look for an explanation online they will find accurate matches | |
| Latency | Latencia | ||
| Level 1 Authorization | Autorización de nivel 1 | ||
| Level 2 Authorization | Autorización de nivel 2 | ||
| Level 3 Authorization | Autorización de nivel 3 | ||
| List of WTC-Related Health Conditions (List) | Lista de las afecciones relacionadas con el WTC | It works well and it is accurate | At times, and depending on the member, we use: lista de enfermedades |
| Logistics Health Incorporated (LHI) | Logistics Health Incoporated | This should be left in English | |
| Major depressive disorder | trastorno depresivo mayor | This is widely used in Spanish, including in the Spanish translation of the DSM-V | trastorno depresivo grave (TDG) used by the CDC |
| Mammogram | Mamografía | ||
| Maximum time interval | Intervalo máximo de tiempo | (with its plural variables depending on the context) | |
| Medicaid | Medicaid | ||
| Medical Benefits Team | Equipo de beneficios médicos | ||
| Medical emergency | Emergencia médica | ||
| Medical monitoring | monitoreo médico | Monitoreo médico is correct and it is widely used by our patients. |
...should always use monitoreo médico for consistency because it is what our members use within the context of their health monitoring (exams).
Vigilancia médica works well in Spanish within the context of vigilancia médica ocupacional, they're not interchangeable for our members.
Medical records expedientes médicos - when referiing to the actual records
| historial médico/clínico - when referring to "updating a medical record". | Most commonly used and understood by our members and by Spanish-speaking speakers. | |||
| It seems that "registros médicos" is often used as a translation (in the U.S.) for electronic medical records. | récords médicos (commonly used in the U.S. and it is also correct). Many front line staff uses this terminology, therefore exposing our members to its use. | |||
| Medically associated health condition | afección associada médicamente | We believe a change in syntax will flow better in Spanish; therefore, it will be easily understood by our members | enfermedad asociada médicamente | |
| Medically necessary treatment | tratamiento necesario médicamente | Both options are widely used within the U.S. healtcare system in the insurace field. | Tratamiento médicamente necesario | |
| Medicare | Medicare | |||
| Member | Miembro | |||
| Member Handbook | Manual para miembros | |||
| Mental health conditions | Enfermedades de salud mental | Enfermedades is much more common than afecciones among our members. They do not tend to use afecciones when they speak, but they understand it when we use it either orally or in printed materials. We use afecciones in many of our publications | These two are commonly used among our members: |
enfermedades de salud mental; and enfermedades mentales
| Minimum latency requirement | Requisito de latencia mínima | |
| Musculoskeletal disorders | Trastornos musculoesqueléticos (SOLO para el personal de respuesta del WTC) | acronym in Spanish: TME. We do not need the English acronym (DSM) |
| National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) | Red Nacional Integral del Cáncer | This is the translation commonly found in reliable sources translated into Spanish, there is a consensus on using this Spanish translation |
| Nationwide Provider Network (NPN) | Red Nacional de Proveedores | This is the translation used by the CDC in Spanish, and it works well with the Spanish spoken in the U.S. |
| Network | Red | |
| New York City Disaster Area | Área de desastre de la ciudad de Nueva York | |
| New York Metropolitan Area | Área metropolitana de la ciudad de Nueva York |
| New-onset and WTC-exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) | Enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC) de aparición nueva inicio reciente | |
| Context will determine the usage of either aparición and inicio. EPOC is NIH's translation and it is accurate in the medical field, as well as the translation used with our members (orally and in printing materials) | ||
| EPOC should be capitalized | inicio reciente When referring to diseases and using a qualifier for onset, reliable sources in the medical field use: |
new onset = inicio reciente late onset = inicio tardío Onset by itself tends to be translated as aparicición, and as inicio when it is used as a modifier.
| No-cost | |||
| Panic disorder | trastorno de pánico | As in English, panic disorder (trastono de pánico) is a condition, there is no need for the plural; still, the condition is characterized by panic attacks (in plural). The sigular form is more often found in reliable sources both in English and Spanish, notably the DSM-V | |
| Pentagon and Shanksville, PA responders | Personal de respuesta del Pentágono y Shanksville, PA | ||
| Petition | Petición | ||
| Pharmacy Benefits | beneficios de farmacia | ||
| Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) | trastorno por estrés postraumático (TEPT) | This is the translation used in the field and in reliable and scholar publications, including the DSM-V, NIH, CDC, among others. | |
| Pulmonary function testing | pruebas de función pulmonar | This is how our members refer to this test. It is also the preferred translation of NIH and other sources. | |
| Responder | Personal de respuesta | socorristas, and the meaning in this context will be "rescuer"; still, socorrista may be back translated as "lifeguard" and can create ambiguity. | |
| Screening-eligible survivor | sobreviviente elegible para pruebas de detección | Pruebas de cernimiento is becoming an increasingly widespread option for translating screening and it is the option used by SAMHSA and the ATTC Centers (both part of DHHS). Nevertheless, our members have been mostly exposed in printed materials to pruebas de detección. We would like to suggest keeping pruebas de deteccion as patients are, and have been, exposed to this terminology more often than not. | |
| September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) | Fondo de Compensación para Víctimas del 11 de septiembre | In Spanish, the months of the year are in lowercase and although the official VCF website has both forms (upper and lower case), the home page has translated September in lowercase (septiembre) and this is the spelling that predominates on its website |
https://www.vcf.gov/spanish
| Skilled Nursing Facility | Centro de enfermería especializada | This is the common translation in many reliable sources and members will be often exposed to this concept in the U.S. healthcare system | |
| Substance use disorder | trastorno por uso de sustancias (TUS) | NOTE: Even if the acceptable alternate translation could be used, the recommended translation implies more information readily available for members interested in searching for additional information in internet | The following two suggestions are also used by WHO, UN, and other reliable sources: |
1. trastornos por uso de sustancias (TUS) - the plural is also commonly found (not as much), but the context will determine which one works best
2. trastorno por consumo de sustancias
| Supporting documentation | documentación de apoyo | a quick search in the internet provides more matches that fit the context when looking for documentación de apoyo, we believe our recommended option provides more matches for our members. | documentación de justificación |
| The Program | El Programa | ||
| Urgent care | Atención médica de urgencias | Cuidado urgente is widely used among our members | cuidado urgente |
The following terms are very common too:
- atención urgente;
- atención de urgencias;
- clínica de urgencias; and
- centro de cuidado urgente
| Workers' Compensation | Compensación de trabajadores | Please see comments on column G. | |
| Compensación laboral is very often the option that our members use before we even suggest one. They are exposed to both options very often and either option seems to be common and widely accepted as members are exposed to variations depending on the forms needed. | Compensación laboral | ||
| World Trade Center (WTC) Health Program | Programa de Salud del WTC | Programa de Salud del WTC has been used for years in many letters and outreach materials. Members hardly ever refer to the program as "de atención médica" and when in-house interpreters call them, they tend to say, "We're calling from the Programa de Salud del WTC...". Bilingual front line staff hardly ever use it. U.S. Spanish-speakers tend to see "health" and think of "salud". The back translation of "atención médica" is: health care; medical care and medical attention. |
| Programa de Salud del WTC is widely used notably by the CDC, NYCOSH, VCF, among other reliable sources. | Programa de Salud del WTC | |||
| WTC General Responder (NYC Responder) | Personal de respuesta general (personal de respuesta de NYC) | |||
| WTC health registry | Registro de Salud del WTC | Registro de Salud is what the CDC and NYC.GOV use | ||
| WTC Responder | Personal de respuesta del WTC | |||
| WTC Survivor | Sobreviviente del WTC | |||
| WTC-3 certification package | Paquete de certificación del WTC | This is also what the CDC has in Spanish | ||
| WTC-related acute traumatic injury | Lesión traumática aguda relacionada con el World Trade Center (WTC) | Please refer to line 3 | acute can also be translated as grave, an alternative often used during interpretations at the Program as members sometimes use it before we do. | |
| WTC-related health condition | Afección relacionada con el WTC | As mentioned previously, our members tend to use more enfermedades than afecciones | enfermedad relacionada con el WTC |

| Acute stress disorder | ostre zaburzenie stresowe | ||||
| Acute traumatic injuries | ostre obrażenia pourazowe | misunderstanding: 1/ “nagłe” means “sudden” and is not used in the Polish medical terminology in this context. “ostre” refers to the urgency and severity of the injury [acute in medical terms] “injuries”and “trauma” should not be confused since the injuries result from the trauma. | |||

| Responder | pracownik służb pierwszego reagowania [back translation: employee of first response services] | This term is especially difficult to translate into Polish since there is no similar general concept in the Polish language. We need to keep in mind that 99% of the Polish speaking patients were involved in the cleanup activities at the WTC site and were not involved in any type of rescue actions. That is why referring to them as "life guards"or “rescuers” is not the best word choice and may be misleading - may even discourage some new, potential Polish speaking responders from joining the Program as they do not identify themselves as rescue team members. | |||
| 9/11 Responder | Pracownik 9/11 [back translation: 9/11 worker] - This translation was used by MSSM in years 2010 -2016 and our Polish speaking members are used to it. | see "Responder" for justification | |||

| You, you (the manner of addressing our members) | formal: Pan/Pani/ Państwo [back translation: Mr./ Ms, Mrs. ] neutral: należy, trzeba/można/ proszę [back translation: one should/ one ought/ please] | cultural/wrong tone of communication: Tone in writing refers to the writer's attitude toward the reader and the subject of the message. We are supposed to provide culturally appropriate services to our LEP patients. Majority of the Polish speaking patients are in their 60s, all were born and grew up Poland. We address them in a polite, formal (Mr. Ms.) way when they come to our clinic and on the phone. This is how we show respect in our culture and our PTs expect this from us. Why then not do so in print? There is a small group, maybe 20% of our Polish speaking PTs, who are younger generation using the internet/smart phones, and who may react well to the informal tone. That's why using the informal tone, for example in the mobile app, is appropriate. However, we suggest to continue using a combination of formal and neutral tone in official letters, consent forms/infomational/educational materials. |
