Camp Nesbit Improvements – Environmental Educational Youth Camp – Roofing & Staining
R9 Unique AAP Project No. CIM-0900-24F-16-0907-02
Camp Nesbit is one of two historically intact CCC organizational camps in the Upper Peninsula U.P.) of Michigan. The primary purpose of this camp is to provide groups a natural setting and unique facility for experiencing and benefitting from environmental education and outdoor recreation opportunities.
There are twelve cabins and numerous associated facilities on site, including modern restrooms, a fully implemented commercial kitchen with attached mess hall, a recreation hall, swim beach, interpretive trail, and ball field.
The buildings are single-story, wood frame construction on concrete block piers. Efforts have been made to make the camp accessible to wheel chairs. One bathhouse, three cabins, and the dining hall are all accessible. Individual cabins do not have plumbing and the facility is not winterized.
The Forest Service maintains the site, including building and grounds maintenance. The site is inspected annually by the local fire department and health department. The Forest provides garbage pickup and tests the water system and beach according to health department regulations. Support and program staff, including cooks, lifeguards, and nurses are not provided by the Forest Service.
Camp Nesbit is used primarily as an environmental education center. Camp Nesbit enjoys a tradition of hosting 6th grade students from local area schools each spring and fall. Annually, 10+ schools totaling over 700 students participate in outdoor environmental programs. During the summer months other non-profit groups such as the Hannahville Indian School, Girl Scouts, faith-based organizations, and others rent out the facility for environmental education programs. Forest Service personnel have increased their presence at the Camp, offering additional programming and support. The camp has the capacity to house 144 youth in addition to adequate adult staff. The camp is generally occupied beginning mid- to late- May through mid- to late-September. The facility is not available for use during the winter.
