Trail Log – Ivestor Gap Trail Assessment Log – Optional Item

Inspection Date: April 1, 2010 by Bruce Lowe, Jody Maney

Non-Wilderness Length: 2.2 miles Wilderness Length: 2.1 miles

Non-Wilderness Trail Class: 3 Wilderness Trail Class: 2

Designed Use: Horse Existing Width: 2’(wilderness) to 10’(non-wilderness) Design Tread Width: 18” to 36” Surface: Native-soil and roadbed/bedrock

Beginning Milepost: Black Balsam Trailhead (Outside Wilderness Area)

Wilderness Boundary: at Ivestor Gap, 2.2 miles from BMP

Ending Milepost: Shining Rock Gap (Inside Wilderness Area)

Ivestor Gap Trail (TR101) is included as an optional bid item. Work begins at the Black Balsam Trailhead and ends at Shining Rock Gap. The trail is comprised of two segments. Segment 1 (2.2 miles) is designed as a Class 3 pack and saddle trail, maintained for pack and saddle, mountain biking and hiking. Segment 2 (2.1 miles) begins at the Shining Rock Wilderness boundary and is designed as a Class 2 pack and saddle trail, maintained for pack and saddle, mountain biking and hiking. Maintenance needs are identified in the attached trail assessment log.

Because Squirrel Gap Trail is located within an Inventoried Roadless Area (and Segment 2 within a Wilderness Area), management direction is to maintain a natural appearing character. Therefore all work shall be achieved using native or natural appearing materials. Armor all water crossings using on site stone or natural appearing imported stone. Where feasible, install grade dips above approaches to water crossings to minimize runoff into streams and rivers. All materials shall be approved by Inspector.

Segment 1 – Non-Wilderness: Work along segment 1 is located adjacent to Sam Knob Inventoried Roadless Area. Live trees along or adjacent to the trail here cannot be removed for the creation of trail maintenance structures. Trees may only be removed if they present a hazard to public health and safety.

This trail follows an old railroad grade and is a seasonally open Forest Service road. This non- Wilderness segment has several locations where water collects, positive drainage is needed. This section will require punching the berm, outsloping and armoring runouts, and some grade dip restoration/installation.

Segment 2 - Wilderness: This segment begins at Station 118+27. Within the gap itself, no ground disturbing activities are allowed. Coordinate the beginning and end point of the gap location, and work within this area, with the COR/Inspector. The approximate stationing at the gap are from the beginning of the Wilderness segment at Sta. 118+27 to approximately Sta. 123+27 (about 500 ft.).

No motorized vehicles, equipment, nor mechanized equipment are allowed on Segment 2, the Wilderness area (hand work only). The trail continues following an old railroad grade. There are numerous tree blowdowns and ice storm damage so clearing and re-establishing the trail corridor is required (brushing the corridor to horse trail specifications, hazard tree removal). The COR must be consulted prior to tree removal in this area.

There are many locations where water collects in the incised trail. Work will include establishing positive drainage, berm removal, outsloping, grade dip restoration / installation, tread restoration, cleaning/opening of all existing culverts. When practical, move the trail tread to the outside edge of the bench.
