Squirrel Gap Trail Assessment Log 1

Squirrel Gap Trail Assessment Log

Inspection Date: 11-30-09 Length: 7.98 Trail Class: 2 Designed Use: Horse (east and west segments), Bike (center segment); see attached map Surface: Native Existing Width: 3’-8’ Design Tread Width: 18”-48” Beginning Milepost: South Mills River Trail TR133 Ending Milepost: Bradley Creek Trail TR351

Overall, the trail is in good shape. It mostly consists of side-hill construction with adequate grade reversals;

however much of the length of the trail tread is in need of rehab to restore positive drainage. General tread rehab includes berm removal; correcting trail creep or sloughing by moving the trail up-slope to its original position, and root removal. Other general maintenance includes clearing the trail corridor as per specifications, removal of all blowdowns across the trail and re-grading the climbing turns to maintain in-sloped rolling crowned switchbacks. Additional itemized work includes removal of dead hazard trees, installation of grade dips, addition of suitable fill material, re-building crib retaining walls and adding step terraces. Since this trail is maintained for horses and bikes step terraces are limited and should be installed with a minimum of 10-12 ft between risers.

Because Squirrel Gap Trail is located within South Mills River Inventoried Roadless Area, management direction is to maintain a natural appearing character. Therefore all cribbing, retaining walls, and/or stairs shall be constructed of native or natural appearing materials. Armor all water crossings using on site stone or natural appearing imported stone. Where feasible, install grade dips above approaches to water crossings to minimize runoff into streams and rivers. All materials shall be approved by Inspector.
