Rainbow Falls Trail Assessment Log 1

Rainbow Falls Trail Assessment Log

Inspection Date : 12-03-09 Inspector Name: B.Lowe, D.Stutzman Length: 1.3 miles Trail Class: 3 Designed Use: Hiking Existing Width: 3’ to 10’ Design Tread Width (for trail segment): 18” to 24” Width for emergency access segment: 6’ to 8’ Surface: Native, gravel in places Beginning Milepost: Gorges State Park boundary southeast of NC281 Ending Milepost: Gorges State Park Boundary west of new Rainbow Falls parking lot

This trail begins on an old roadbed used in the past to access the falls. From the FS boundary at 0+00 to steps at Turtleback Falls at 13+31, drainage should be corrected and surface should be minimally restored to allow access by ATV/UTV for medical evacuation purposes. From 13+31 to 65+48, the trail should be restored to TC3 hiking trail specs; as should the spur trail to the bottom of Rainbow Falls. These two trail segments need tread restoration, berm removal, corridor brushing, hazard tree removal, and installation of steps, cribbing, handrails, stream crossing armor, and surface gravel as specified in the following log.
