STEWARDSHIP CONTRACT
SOIL DECOMPACTION AND SLASH PLACEMENT
Unless otherwise agreed to in writing by the Contracting Officer, the Contractor shall perform services according to the following requirements:
1. Soil de-compaction and slash placement (SCHEDULE OF ITEMS B.1.8)
(a) Landings and Skid trails (Excavator ripping (soil de-compaction) and Slash Placement).
Units Acres Mandatory 7 2 Optional
Work identified here shall be performed by the Contractor with an excavator meeting the following description, unless, as a part of an alternate offer, a different solution for achieving the requirements stated below was proposed by the Contractor, and the Contracting Officer accepted that alternate offer (See L. 7(a)(2)):
Excavator shall be equipped with a bucket and thumb and be of sufficient size to break up and rehabilitate compacted soil on old roads and old/new skid trails/landings and place slash on rehabilitated roads and skid trails.
Treatments will be limited to old and new roads, landings and skid trails immediately off the landings. Impacted areas will be de-compacted by roughening the soil to a minimum depth of 6 inches, but not to exceed 12 inches. Soil should not be inverted (mixed) during de-compaction.
Supportive roots of trees shall not be severed. Treated areas shall span the total width of compaction. Once de-compacted, slash shall be placed across 80-85% of the treated surface to a depth of 1- 2 inches. Fine slash material is preferred where available. De-compaction and slash placement shall be completed in one pass to prevent compacting or displacing treated area.
Duff and litter placement will be done with a hand shovel at a rate of 2 shovel full’s per 20 sq ft of rehabilitated area to inoculate the forest floor with micro-organisms to facilitate soil recovery.
Duff and litter removal will be distributed around the site as not to impact one particular area.
