About this file
This is a technical specification section (Section 02224) for excavation, backfilling, and compacting for cattleguard structures. The document provides detailed requirements for excavation and installation, including specific instructions for preparing the site, handling materials, and compacting backfill. Key requirements include using unclassified excavation materials, compacting subbase with at least four passes of a "wacker" type packer, and ensuring proper moisture content for backfill. The specification mandates that backfill material must be uniform and select, placed in 6-inch layers, and thoroughly compacted. No direct payment will be made for this work, with costs to be included in other contract bid items.
The document emphasizes precise installation techniques for cattleguard bases, including establishing proper foundation surfaces, aligning concrete bases perfectly, and ensuring complete support through compacted backfill. Environmental considerations include limiting project boundaries to existing disturbed areas, managing contaminated sites by excavating and replacing materials, and maintaining proper drainage. The specification references AASHTO standards and requires coordination with the Contracting Officer Representative throughout the excavation and installation process.

EXCAVATION, BACKFILLING, AND COMPACTING FOR STRUCTURES
02224 - 1
SECTION 02224
PART 1: GENERAL
1.01 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes: Excavating, backfilling, compacting and drainage for cattleguards.
B. Related Sections:
General Information and Requirements Section 01009
1.02 REFERENCES
A. American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials:
AASHTO T 99-94 Moisture-Density Relations of Soils Using a 5.5lb(2.5kg) Rammer and a 12-Inch (305 mm) Drop
1.03 DEFINITIONS
A. Unclassified Excavation: Shall consist of the material excavated and its placement regardless of its nature.
1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Failure Criteria: Not limited to the following
1. Settlement of backfill, which would allow moisture to pond.
1.05 PROJECT / SITE CONDITIONS
A. Requirements: The project boundaries shall be limited to the existing disturbed areas or as staked in the field.
B. Environmental Conditions
1. Areas that have become saturated with oil, gasoline, or bituminous products shall be excavated to a depth of 12 inches beyond the contaminated material: backfill with approved material.
2. Grade to produce a well-drained surface as directed by the Contracting
Officer Representative.
PART 2: PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
02224 - 2
A. General: Material excavated shall be unclassified. Backfill material shall be approved before use. Material from excavations shall be used unless it contains ice or frozen earth, debris, earth with high moisture content, or is specified in other sections to be replaced. Materials removed in clearing and grubbing shall not be used for backfill.
B. Bedding: Bedding shall conform to the general requirements for soil materials above, and shall not contain rock larger than 2 inches in diameter.
C. Backfill: Shall conform to the requirements for soil materials above, and shall not contain rock larger than 2 inches in diameter.
PART 3: EXECUTION
3.01 PREPARATION
A. Clearing: Shall be according to Section 02231 - Clearing and Grubbing.
B. Utilities: Before starting excavation, establish the location and extent of underground utilities in the work area. Protect utility services uncovered by excavation. Notify the Contracting Officer immediately if utilities are damaged. Damage to utilities shall be repaired at the Contractor's expense.
C. Dewatering: Keep the excavation dewatered so that installation of cattleguard bases can be carried on under dewatered conditions. Dispose of excess water by using natural drainage ways near the site to the extent of their natural capacity, when no erosion or other damage will occur.
3.02 INSTALLATION
A. Excavation: Perform excavation to the lines, grades, and elevations as set by the Contracting Officer to allow for safety, placing of materials and inspection. When frost action occurs, remove frozen soil and replace with approved soil, compacted according to the requirements for bedding.
B. Bedding for Cattleguard bases: The layer of bedding material shall be placed to the width of the cattleguard along its entire length. The foundation surface shall be compacted to support concrete bases at a level height along their entire length.
C. Backfilling and Drainage for Cattleguard:
1. Compact subbase to receive crushed aggregate by compacting thoroughly by making no less than four (4) passes with a fully functional “wacker” type packer. Contractor shall adjust moisture content of backfill to the optional level for compaction. In most
02224 - 3 cases, this will mean the Contractor will have to add water to the backfill.
2. The concrete base shall be completely and thoroughly supported by compacted backfill material at least as wide and along the total length of the base, compact thoroughly by making no less than four
(4) passes with a fully functional “wacker” type packer.
Contractor shall adjust moisture content of backfill to the optional level for compaction. In most cases, this will mean the Contractor will have to add water to the backfill. Concrete bases shall be in perfect alignment in all directions before cattleguard steel grid is set in place. Do not set until approved by Contractor Officer.
3. Backfill shall be of uniform, select material. Backfill shall be placed under the concrete bases in layers not exceeding 6-inches in depth and compacted thoroughly by making no less than four (4) passes with a fully functional “wacker” type packer. Contractor shall adjust moisture content of backfill to the optional level for compaction. In most cases, this will mean the Contractor will have to add water to the backfill. If there is, a difference of options as to the amount of water needed then the Contractor Officer shall have the final authority.
PART 4: MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
4.1 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT
A. Units: The work described in this section will not be measured for payment.
4.2 BASIS OF PAYMENT
A. Payment: No direct payment for the work described under this section will be made. Consideration for this item shall be included in the bid price for other items of the Contract.
