About this file

This document provides intact stability calculations for an excavator barge to be constructed under solicitation number W912BU-23-B-0024 issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering District Philadelphia. The calculations demonstrate compliance of the 150' x 40' x 9' barge design with intact stability criteria in 46 CFR 174.015 for deck cargo barges operating in protected waters. Analysis is presented for lightship and five loading conditions with an excavator or crane onboard, showing the barge meets minimum righting energy requirements and achieves positive stability up to the angle of flooding or 40 degrees of heel. Maximum allowable vertical center of gravity curves are developed by displacement to establish permissible loading limits.

INTRODUCTION

Applicability

This information is applicable to the following vessel for MDC Project 3218:

MDC Hull Number Vessel Name

871 TBD

The vessel is a deck barge with a travelling spud system that will be separately paired with a crawler excavator and a wheeled crane, intended for rivers, inshore, intracoastal and protected waters within the St. Paul District area of operations.

Purpose

Stability calculations are to demonstrate compliance with specified stability requirements and to develop a curve of the maximum cargo center of gravity vs. draft.

Criteria

1. 46 CFR 174.015 – Criterion for Deck Cargo Barges for operating in lakes, bays, sounds and Great Lakes summer service.

(a)(2) At least 10-foot-degrees of righting energy to the smallest of the following:

(A) Angle of maximum righting arm

(B) Angle of downflooding, or

(C) 40-degrees.

2. 46 CFR 170.170 – Weather Criteria (Required GM) for Protected Waters;

(a) Each vessel must be shown by design calculations to have a metacentric height

(GM) that is equal to or greater than the following in each condition of loading and operation:

Where—

P = 0.00261+(L/14,200)2 tons/ft2 . . . for service on protected waters.

L = LBP in feet.

A = projected lateral area in square feet of the portion of the vessel and deck cargo above the waterline.

)tan(TW

PAHGM >

871-B155-01 Page 2

H = the vertical distance in feet from the center of “A” to the center of the underwater lateral area or approximately to the one-half draft point.

W = displacement in long tons.

T = the lesser of either 14 degrees heel or the angle of heel in degrees at which one-half the freeboard to the deck edge is immersed. The deck edge is to be taken as the intersection of the side shell and the uppermost continuous deck below which the side shell is weathertight.

(b) If approved by the Coast Guard Marine Safety Center or the ABS, a larger value of T may be used for a vessel with a discontinuous weather deck or abnormal sheer.

CALCULATION NOTES

1. The calculations are based on the vessels molded dimensions.

2. All distances are measured from the vessel's centerline, baseline and Midship. Locations forward of midship are negative, and locations aft of midship are positive. Locations to the port of centerline are negative, and to the starboard of centerline are positive.

Vertical locations above the baseline are positive.

3. The calculations are for fresh water, specific gravity 1.000

4. The calculations assume no initial trim and no initial heel.

5. All weight units are long tons, equal to 2240 pounds

6. All length units, unless noted, are in feet.

7. Per 46 CFR 174.015, for the purpose of the section, downflooding angle means the static angle from the intersection of the vessel’s centerline and waterline in calm water to the first opening that does not close watertight automatically. For this vessel design, all hatches on the deck are watertight. In addition, all compartment/void vents are the gooseneck type with hinged covers or invert ball checks and can be closed to be weathertight.

8. The Intact Stability analysis were performed for the following conditions.

1. Lightship

2. Departure condition & unballasted, with R976 Excavator on Board.

3. Arrival condition & unballasted, with R976 Excavator on Board.

4. Departure condition & unballasted, with GRT8100 Crane on Board.

5. Arrival condition & unballasted, with GRT8100 Crane on Board.

9. GHS computer software (Creative Systems Inc., Port Townsend, WA (360) 385-6212) was used extensively in the development of this document.
