About this file

This document provides damage stability calculations for an excavator barge to be constructed under solicitation number W912BU-23-B-0024 issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District. The calculations demonstrate the barge will meet USCG regulations for surviving single compartment flooding at various drafts and heel/trim conditions when configured with either an excavator or crane. Critical points, maximum allowable centers of gravity, and righting arm curves are analyzed for 19 damage conditions. The barge dimensions are 150' x 40' x 9' with a traveling spud system for rivers, inshore and protected coastal waters.

INTRODUCTION

Applicability

This information is applicable to the following vessel for MDC Project 3218:

MDC Hull Number Vessel Name

871 TBD

The vessel is a deck barge with a travelling spud system that will be separately paired with a crawler excavator and a wheeled crane, intended for rivers, inshore, intracoastal and protected waters within the St. Paul District area of operations.

Purpose

To demonstrate compliance with specified damaged stability requirements at operational drafts and conditions, as specified in the vessel specifications.

Criteria

The contract specifications require the following:

USCG regulation 46 CFR Subchapter C, Section 28.580 Unintentional flooding, (f) Survival Conditions.

(1) The angle of equilibrium after flooding does not exceed 25° (0.44 radians); and

(2) Through an angle of 20° (0.35 radians) beyond the angle of equilibrium after flooding, the following are met—

(i) The righting arm curve is positive;

(ii) The maximum righting arm is at least 4 inches (102 millimeters);

(iii) Each submerged opening is capable of being made weathertight;

871-B150-01 Page 2

CALCULATION NOTES

• The calculations are based on the molded dimensions.

• The calculations are for fresh water, specific gravity 1.000

• The initial heel is assumed zero.

• All weight units are long tons, equal to 2240 pounds, and all length units, unless noted, are in feet.

• The Damage Stability analysis were performed for the following conditions:

1. Departure condition & unballasted, with R976 Excavator on Board.

2. Arrival condition & unballasted, with R976 Excavator on Board.

3. Departure condition & unballasted, with GRT8100 Crane on Board.

4. Arrival condition & unballasted, with GRT8100 Crane on Board.

• For this analysis, the survival criteria is evaluated for single compartment damage condition.

• Per 46 CFR 28.580(f), all submerged openings through an angle of 20° beyond equilibrium shall be capable of being made weathertight. For this vessel design, all hatches on the deck are watertight. In addition, all compartment/void vents are the gooseneck type with hinged covers or inverted ball checks and can be closed to be weathertight. This survival criteria is satisfied.

• GHS computer software (Creative Systems Inc., Port Townsend, WA (360) 385-6212) was used extensively in the development of this document.

CRITICAL POINTS

• Deck Fwd Edge Port/Stbd, watertight, 75’ forward, 20’ outboard, 9’ above baseline

• Deck Midship Edge Port/Stbd, watertight, 0’ forward, 20’ outboard, 9’ above baseline

• Deck Aft Edge Port/Stbd, watertight, 75’ aft, 20’ outboard, 9’ above baseline

• Spud Line Hole Port/Stbd

• Spud Control Room Door (Port), weathertight, 9.5’ forward, 15’ outboard, 9.5’ above baseline

• Companionway Door (Port), weathertight, 15’ forward, 15’ outboard, 9.5’ above baseline

• Companionway Door (Stbd), weathertight, 12.25’ forward, 15’ outboard, 9.5’ above baseline

RESULTS

In all conditions, the barge satisfies the survival requirements identified in 46 CFR

28.580(f) with any single compartment damaged and flooded.
