Tower and Appurtenance Features: The Subcontract documents include a drawing that depicts the tower platform minimum size and layout required and indicates the approximate locations for antenna mounts, lightning protection (LP) support masts (LP masts and mounting details for it depicted in EES & LP Details drawing) and other appurtenances along with additional drawings that detail standards governing design and construction. Refer the attachments to these specifications for layouts of the four platform sizes that indicate which type antennas are located in the various mounts for use in preparing the platform and tower support structure calculations. The new tower must include stairway access to the antenna platform for use by maintenance workers designed per the requirements listed below and include a security fabric enclosure for the lowest stair run with padlockable entrance gate at the stair bottom for additional prevention of unauthorized access to the platform. The stairway will be located within the structure

central interior with stair landings provided that meet the same OSHA requirement as for the work platform. The new tower antenna cabling J-boxes are to be located within the platform area over the cables run up the tower, in between the stair runs, supported from either stair guardrails or a separate, dedicated support structure using material components sized at least as large as those used for the guardrails (J-boxes to be provided by others, support materials by the Subcontractor with other tower materials).

A. Tower Platform to Support Structure Configuration: The tower platform and top of the support structure must be designed and fabricated such that the entire platform area may be preassembled as one complete assembly and staged for lifting and erection upon the top of the support structure as a separate section. Acceptable methods are via either top of support structure includes location of a leg splice in the area of from one to three feet below the platform level or via top of support structure includes horizontal members that tie legs together and directly support the upper platform section upon them. Configurations with tops of support structure legs integrally nested within the platform framing will not be accepted.

B. Tower and Platform Antenna Cabling Provisions: The platform deck supports and grating must be configured to include cable raceways within the deck located from directly in line with the cable junction box(es) sides out to the perimeter rails on both sides of the platform and from the perimeter rails in to each of the inner mounts with no bends in their runs. Raceways must include removable top cover plates that do not create trip hazards with the grating walk surface and end 4”-6” from platform toeboards at sides and at inner mounts to allow for cable exit bends. Covers must also not flex under 250# load (min.) applied to center. Raceway minimum widths from J-Box(es) out to platform rails to each side must be 6” (min.) for 12 and 16 antenna mount towers or 8” (min.) for 23 and 32 antenna mount towers (see NOTE below). Raceway width from perimeter rails to inner mounts may be 4” wide.

Platform perimeter midrails must include holes in “down” legs for 3/8” dia. bolts for others to use for installing perimeter raceways. A minimum of one bolt hole must be provided at three foot (max.) intervals beginning at one foot in from corners. Tower materials must include a 10’ section of cable bridge (with ice shield and trapeze hangers) and provisions for the assembly to be mounted from under the bottom of base J-Box(es) over to the tower center passing under the lowest stair run. Materials must also include a cable ladder with provisions to install it centered within the tower between stair runs from the base up to the platform stair opening side where J-

Box(es) are to be installed.

NOTE:

Cable raceways from J-Box(es) may be of 4” minimum width if fabricated with a lower trough level under the grating bottom that results in at least a two inch depth of cableway under the cover plate.

C. Grating: In addition to requirements for grating noted elsewhere, where multiple sections of grating are used within an area, such must be fabricated so that, after galvanizing, deck sections are fit snug together within their areas to result in total gaps less than 7/8” across the area in either direction. Galvanized or stainless steel

TOWER/FOUNDATION SPECIFICATIONS – FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY 20

fasteners that use J-bolts to attach to framing flanges rather than drilling must be provided for installing grating.

D. Guardrails: Structural members used for the guardrails of platforms, stairs, and landings must be oriented to where “flat” surfaces are on the tops and towards workers. Any/all structural angles, channels, etc. used for the guardrails MAY NOT be oriented with a leg or flange in the “up” or “in” toward the worker side of the guarded area.

E. Toeboards: If materials used for toeboards are of flat plate rather than structural angles, minimum thickness of plates must be 3/8”.

F. Antenna Mounts: New outer and inner antenna mounts must be provided with the tower, configured and located as indicated on the platform drawing with all tops at 60 inches (5’) above the deck walking surface and mount pipes plumb. Tower platform perimeter framing and guardrail components must be designed to withstand all required service loads transferred from the outer antenna mounts without use of stiffener bracing components that extend into the platform working area side of the guardrail. The floor framing in the area under the inner mounts must be designed to withstand service loads resulting from the inner mounts with a minimal amount of flexing. Inner mounts located within the main cable pathways from the J-Box(es) out to PF sides must be mounted to result in 1.5-2 inch clearance under the mount plates to allow for cables to pass under those mounts.

NOTE: In addition, the floor framing components and inner mounts as attached to them must be required to withstand application of a 100-pound lateral load applied to the top of the mount pipe in any direction with total flex resulting in no more than one half inch (max.) lateral movement when measured at the top of the pipe.

G. Base Junction Box Awning: A rain and ice shield awning with back shield must be provided with the tower to protect workers while performing maintenance within the

J-boxes located at the tower base. Refer to the Site Electrical Work Details drawing for more configuration information. Framing for J-box supports and the shield panels must be mounted directly to the tower structure components for support with mounting bolt holes predrilled during fabrication of the tower components (no field drilling needed to mount awning components). Top awning material must be of puncture resistant HSS corrugated sheet metal (tower drawings are to note what material is used for approval) or consist of two pieces with top being of cabling type ice shield/bridge material over a lower of low/mild strength corrugated sheet metal.

NOTE: Awning minimum width must be 60” for the 12 and 16 antenna sized platform towers and 99” for the 23 and 32 antenna sized towers.

H. Tower Stairs: The new tower design must include an OSHA compliant stairway access from the ground level, up the tower, and into the work platform area per the design requirements listed below. Stairways, landings and the new communication cabling must be located within the structure footprint so that most, if not all, cabling and mounting hardware items may be maintained by workers from the stairs.

Requirements include:

TOWER/FOUNDATION SPECIFICATIONS – FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY 21

1. Stairs must be designed and fabricated similar to the other tower structural items to require field bolting only of components for installation (shop welding will be allowed for subassemblies prior to hot-dip galvanizing but, no field welding will be allowed).

2. Stair and landing walk tread areas must be comprised of open grating material, 30 inches wide (min.) between the side supports and designed to withstand a 500-pound live load applied to the center of the tread with a minimum factor of safety of 2.

3. Stair and landing supporting structures designed to support at least two (2) 500 pound live loads, imposed with a two foot horizontal separation along the direction and upon the center of each stair run or landing with a minimum factor of safety of 2.

4. Must include OSHA compliant guardrails on both sides with 30 inches (min.)

clearance width and with one handrail located on either side that may encroach 3 inches (max.) into stair width space.

5. Steps must be OSHA compliant for tread depth, height and uniform/same within each run, landing to landing.

6. The entrance into the platform work area at the top must include guardrails and a spring loaded entrance gate, opening into the work area direction only.

7. The bottom of the lowest stair run must be integrally supported structurally to the tower (either via connections to other tower structural members or to the tower foundation). For pier designs, stair pier to be 4’ (four feet) diameter (min.), twice local frost depth (min.) and be located so that stairs land with a minimum of half the pier area away from the tower center remains clear for stair approach.

8. The lowest run, from finish grade to support framing above at the first landing level, must be enclosed with galvanized 9-11 GA expanded metal fabric with hinged door of same material having padlock provision at stair entrance for security against unauthorized access. Door and security materials must be configured to allow for fully opening the door without interfering with tower members (center opening, double doors are allowed). Door to have tamper-proof hinges and mounting.

9. All materials used must be hot-dipped galvanized after fabrication as done for the tower structure.

10. After galvanization, stair runs must be fully assembled as units from landing to landing for field delivery (stringers and step treads, minimum, side rails may be delivered for field assembly/bolting if they are not welded to stringers). Prior to delivery, dimensions must be verified for proper fit of the assembled stair runs to their bottom and upper tower framing connections at landings for the units.

7.1.3. Tower Submittals: Subcontractor must prepare and transmit submittals either for approval or for information to be placed in the record as noted within the “Materials” and

“Submittals” specification Sections for the new tower work items noted below:

A. Calculations and Certifications of Tower Structure Design: Submit calculations used for the design of the tower and platform with a statement certifying the design complies with the requirements of this specification and the applicable codes for the

TOWER/FOUNDATION SPECIFICATIONS – FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY 22

specific location and type structure, bearing the current professional seal of the design engineer of record. The calculations must include a summary listing the maximum reaction forces imposed by the tower that must be resisted by the foundation resulting from all load combinations required for consideration by ANSI/TIA 222 and the design standards contained in the S001 contract drawing. Tower location determines which Design Criteria Group loadings must be considered for the design. Submit structural software calculations output in a form that does not require the software to review. Design calculations for the platform may be performed with any software commercially available to the public and submitted either separately or with the tower calculations, but must consider the same wind and ice load combinations required for the tower in addition to the required deck loads. The tower structure calculations must be performed using Tower Numerics, tnxTower® software, manually entering the platform loads information resulting from the platform design analysis where/as appropriate. Submit the tower tnxTower digital model files for review and the file record. Tower foundation design follows structure design and approval and may be performed via any commercially available design software.

B. Tower Assembly/Erection Drawings: Submit drawings to scale that indicate the tower structural components (legs, bracing, connection plates, welding and bolting information, etc.) and that include clear depictions of the locations and components to be used for all items noted above and how they will be incorporated into the structure.

Details must include enough information to ensure compliance with critical clearance and other dimension requirements pertaining to worker maintenance and fall protection safety issues. The assembly/erection drawing(s) must as a minimum include isometric views of each of the tower sections as will be fabricated (sections are areas between each leg joint/splice) at least one isometric view of the completed tower and platform and may be included with the assembly/erection drawings.

NOTE: Approval of drawings and final acceptance and payment for materials does not relieve Subcontractor from responsibility for resolving any design or fabrication issues that may become apparent later during the field construction assembly work at no additional cost at that time (under warranty). No field drilling, welding, or torch cutting of structural components will be allowed for correction of fabrication, “fit up,” or other errors without express approval from the tower design engineer. Field modifications may be performed to allow for assembly to proceed, however, remaking of components and replacement may be required as needed if field modifications do not get approved for the permanent work.

C. Assembly & Erection Procedures: If the tower assembly and erection must follow specific procedures unusual to normal industry practice to result in a structure compliant with all requirements, submit written instructions to be used for field assembly and erection including the chronological sequence/schedule of the required activities, the number of personnel that will need to be on the tower and on the ground, the type(s) of major equipment and safety procedures that should be used, etc.

D. Fabrication/Shop Drawings: Submit the drawings as used for manufacturing of the individual components to the Contractor for future FAA maintenance needs.

TOWER/FOUNDATION SPECIFICATIONS – FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY 23

E. Mill Certificates: Submit mill certificates for the material used for the tower, indicating in the submission the country of origin and what structural steel component(s) for the tower were fabricated from the material represented by each certificate.

F. Welding Procedures/Welder Certifications: All welds used for the tower must be limited to shop fabrication for the attachment of connection plates to…
