About this file

This document is instructional guidance on compliance with Military Standard 129 (Mil-Std-129R) marking and shipping label requirements for GSA vendor partners.

The guidance provides a brief overview of Mil-Std-129R requirements but is not all-inclusive, with Mil-Std-129R taking precedence where deviations exist. Vendors are responsible for ensuring compliance with the most current version. Unit and intermediate container marking must include barcoded NSN with hyphens, cage code, part number, nomenclature, quantity and unit of issue, contract or purchase order number, batch/lot number, shelf-life marking, and TCN number if available; if both contract and purchase order numbers cannot fit, the purchase order number takes precedence. Exterior containers must use the same basic label format as unit containers but without item description, and must include barcode for NSN, purchase order number, and CAGE code on one large label or two smaller labels placed side-by-side. Unit, intermediate, and exterior containers require identification text marking per Mil-Std-129R 5.1.1, which specifies NSN/NATO stock number, CAGE code, part number, item description or nomenclature, quantity and UI, contract or purchase order number, military preservation method and date, shelf life, and serial number(s). Exterior containers, palletized unit loads, and unpacked items require additional marking including NSN, CAGE code, part number, item description, quantity and UI, contract or purchase order number, military preservation method, gross weight, proper shipping name and HAZMAT identification number, shelf life, and serial number(s). The Transportation Control Number (TCN) must appear on shipping labels in clear text and barcode format for FAS Distribution Operation shipments. Military Shipping Label (MSL) requirements are specified in Mil-Std-129R Para 5.2.2, with MSL format and placement detailed in accompanying figures. For hazardous materials, additional requirements apply per Mil-Std-129R Section 5.13. The document includes figures demonstrating unit, intermediate, and exterior container identification markings, MSL examples, GSA Form 3186 reference points, and typical linear bar code (Code 39) field examples. Vendors must acknowledge understanding and commit to 100% compliance with all Mil-Std-129R requirements, with additional requirements for HAZMAT materials specified in Military Standard 129R.
