Hampton VA RFI 2/21/2024
1. Can you confirm the openings requiring auto operators as there seems to be a discrepancy between the hardware sets and the door schedule. The hardware set has one dual (door 100-45) and four single operators (130A-45, C100B-45 & C100C-45). The remarks in the door schedule ask for two, doors 130A-45 & C100C-45.
The floor plan for C101-45 next to C100C-45 shows push plates to that opening, but it’s not calling for an operator in the hardware sets or door schedule. It would make sense if C100C-45 has one, C101-45 should also have one.
Response: Revise door 100C-45 hardware set to 23.0. Delete door 100C-45 from hardware set 14.0 in specifications.
2. The specification is asking for “high energy” door operators under ANSI 156.10. Is this preferred opposed to “low energy” under ANSI 156.19? The spec is conflicting as it requests “high energy” doors but also requires for a motion detector to activate the opener as well as push plates.
a. With a high energy door, they open at a faster speed, and it can only be activated by a motion sensor. Along with that to meet code, there needs to be safety presence sensors as well as guide rails, some up to 8’ long protruding from the opening, which are not specified for this project. Typically, high energy doors/guide rails are used in high traffic openings like grocery stores.
b. A “low energy” door operator under ANSI 156.19 installation appears to be best and more cost effective for the hospital personnel (and ADA accessibility) as the door opens at a slower speed and there’s no need for safety presence sensors (although they can be installed in either case) or guide rails. Low Energy door operators are also activated by push or wave plates only (knowing act). Please confirm the low energy door operators can be utilized for this project?
Response: Provide Door Operators per specification section 08 71 13.11 issued with this Amendment. Specification Section 08 71 13 shall be deleted from the Documents. An updated Specification Table of Contents is included with this Amendment.
3. For the VA Furnished/Installed equipment to be relocated (ie. “V V -R” codes on Equipment Schedule on sheet AE412-B45) – is the VA personnel to relocate as well?
Response: Spec Section 01 00 00, Article 1.26 describes that the Contractor shall…install all existing equipment indicated by the symbol “R”.
4. There are no exterior elevations shown for Building 110. Can this be provided to determine the length of the windows?
Response: The length of the windows can be determined from the plan views provided. The height of the window opening is approximately 6’-5 ½” per sheet 110-16 of original construction drawings. Contractor shall field verify actual opening dimensions prior to ordering and fabricating materials needed for the work.
5. For Bldg 110 – Please advise of type of window shades to use. The drawings do not indicate.
Response – Roller shades are not required for BLDG 110.
6. Specification 122413 1.9A requires a chain warranty. Every manufacturer specifically excludes the chain from the warranty. Can this requirement be removed?
Response: Specification 12 24 13 Paragraph 1.9.A. Roller Shade Hardware and Chain Warranty: Manufacturer's standard non-depreciating warranty for interior shading.
If manufacturer’s standard excludes a warranty on the chain, that is acceptable.
7. With reference to the Dual shade Specification 122413:
2.2D4a requires an enclosed hembar without specifically stating which of the 2 shades are meant.
2.2D4b requires a slot in the bottom bar with wool pile light seal for the room darkening shades.
If the bar is enclosed as in 2.2D4a then it cannot have the option as noted in 2.2D4b.
If 2.2D4b is required then the bottom bars will have to be different types on the front and rear shade and may not be visually pleasing.
Response: Both shades require a hembar. Eliminate the wool pile light seal hembar from the Room-Darkening Shades. Both shades shall have the standard hembar.
8. Specification 122413 2.2D does not include a side channel. Typically, you do not see a bottom light seal required if side channels are not being used. Please advise if side channels should be included?
Response: Side channels are not required.
9. There seems to be a conflict in the following items:
In Room 109-45 the CW1 on elevation 1/AE202-B45 has detail 2/AE314-B45.
Detail 2/AE314-B45 directs to detail 8/AE551.
Detail 8/AE551 shows a shade installed in a recessed pocket with a bottom closure.
AC111-B45 notes that this window gets a shade type RS-1 as noted in specification 122413 2.2B Specification 122413 2.2B7 requires a fascia.
If detail 8/AE551 is correct then this should be type RS-2?
Please clarify the correct shade type requirement for this detail as it may cause discrepancy in all other shade requirements.
Response: Revise window shade type at all CW-1 locations in room 109-45 to RS-2.
10. Spec section 01 35 26 states that the SSHO must be a separate individual from the superintendent/QCM. Can the prime contractor’s on-site superintendent also serve as the QCM, or must the prime contractor employ 3 full time employees to remain on site 100% of the time during construction, as separate individuals for the Superintendent, SSHO and the QCM?
Response: Specification Section 01 32 26 Paragraph 1.7.C. describes the SSHO requirement. The SSHO shall be a separate person from the Site Superintendent and/or Quality Control Manager roles. Specification Section 01 45 00 Paragraph 3.4.B. defines the requirement for the CQC System Manager (QCM). The QCM role can be assigned to the Site Superintendent provided the other required qualifications of the QCM are met.

Response: The space assigned is to be kept orderly and grass height no taller than four inches.
