About this file
This is a laboratory analysis report documenting asbestos identification testing conducted by Schneider Laboratories, Inc. on bulk samples collected from Building 1 at Miles City, Montana for the client Titan Environmental Consultants, Inc., who was engaged by Montana VA Healthcare System.
The report presents polarized light microscopy (PLM) analysis results for eight bulk samples collected on August 15, 2007, and analyzed on August 23, 2007, using EPA Method 600/M4/82/020. Two samples (RWI-1-02 and RWI-1-04) containing pipe insulation from Room 177A tested positive for asbestos and were flagged with "positive stop instructions," resulting in analysis termination for subsequent samples from the same location. Sample RWI-1-02 contained 20% chrysotile asbestos fibers with 65% cellulose fiber and 15% non-fibrous material. Sample SV-1-08 (undercoating from Room 232) contained 3% chrysotile asbestos fibers with 97% non-fibrous material. The remaining five samples (FB-1-01, MP-1-05, VC-1-06, and LC-1-07) tested negative for asbestos. The report notes that samples analyzed using EPA test method are subject to limitations of light microscopy including matrix interference, and recommends gravimetric reduction and correlative analyses for all non-friable, organically bound materials. All results relate only to samples as received by the laboratory, with a reporting limit of 1% or greater.

Samples analyzed by the EPA Test Method are subject to the limitations of light microscopy including matrix interference. Gravimetric reduction and correlative analyses are recommended for all non-friable, organically bound materials. This method has a reporting limit of 1% or greater. Visual estimation contains an inherent range of uncertainty. This report must not be reproduced except in full with the approval of the lab, and must not be used to claim NVLAP or other gov't agency endorsement.
