About this file
This document is an Infection Prevention & Control Class II Precautions document for the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, specifically for Building 33 Floor Abatement scheduled for February 27, 2025. The document outlines comprehensive infection control protocols for construction work, detailing specific requirements before, during, and after work activities to minimize patient care disruption and prevent contamination.
Key precautions include performing noninvasive work without blocking patient care, containing dust and debris, using only designated construction routes for waste removal, installing sticky dust collection mats, maintaining clean surroundings through HEPA vacuuming, and implementing negative air requirements to remove contaminants. The document emphasizes cleaning environmental surfaces, checking air registers, verifying HVAC system cleanliness and operational status, and ensuring that negative air devices remain operational after dust-creating activities to remove contaminants before removing critical barriers.

Before and During Work Upon Completion
1. Perform noninvasive work activity as to not block or interrupt patient care.
2. Perform noninvasive work activities in areas that are not directly occupied with patients.
3. Perform noninvasive work activity in a manner that does not create dust.
4. Special Note: Close area under renovation with either a partition or closing the cross-corridor doors.
5. Contain all trash and debris in the work area.
6. Construction Waste:
a. Transport container should be nonporous/smooth, cleanable, and have a hard lid.
b. Containers must be damp-wiped clean and free of visible dust/debris before leaving the contained work area.
c. When removing debris from the contained work area, utilize only the designated construction route.
7. Install a sticky (dust collection) mat at entrance of contained work area. Sticky mats must be changed routinely and when visibly soiled.
8. When area is not contained, maintain clean surroundings by damp mopping or HEPA vacuuming surfaces.
Cleaning:
1. Clean work areas including all environmental surfaces, high horizontal surfaces, and flooring materials.
2. Check all supply and return air registers for dust accumulation on upper surfaces as well as air diffuser surfaces.
HVAC Systems:
1. Remove isolation of HVAC system in areas where work is being performed. Verify that HVAC systems are clean and operational.
2. Verify the HVAC systems meet original airflow and air exchange design specifications.
Negative Air Requirements:
A. The use of negative air must be designed to remove contaminates from the work area.
B. Negative air devices must always remain operational and in place for a period after completion of dust creating activities to remove contaminants from the work area and before removal of critical barriers.
